Burning mouth syndrome

Kate197048 · 18/02/2019 16:19

Hi had burning mouth now since October last year, finally been referred by the dentist so waiting for an appointment, has anybody ever found a reason or anything to help , I’ve tried all the dry mouth sprays, gels etc and nothing works, some days it’s better than others. Gone onto hrt 5 days ago in a hope it may help , the menopause can effect your mouth due to lack of Estrogen (I think) , it’s very distressing some days and has a big impact on my life, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

There was an ongoing thread on this on another forum. I think the upshot was it was nothing to do with menopause (I've not heard of it) and a dental/ oral problem.
Obvious question but have you googled the condition?
Meno can affect the mouth but it's more to do with being post meno and loss of bone density in the jaw which can affect teeth.
Is your diet okay? Sores at the corner of the mouth are linked to low Vitamin B- are you on a special diet or do you smoke?

Boiledeggandtoast · 19/02/2019 08:06

During my perimenopause I had cracks at the corner of my mouth and a very sore tongue which was really painful if I ate anything that was even slightly spicy. It transpired that I was very anaemic (due to torrential periods) and once I was on iron supplements it resolved itself. Is anaemia a possibility?

Kate197048 · 19/02/2019 08:09

I have googled it and it took me to a meno site , it’s due to low Estrogen in the salvia , dentist and doctors have both said the menopause could be a contributor, even a doctor at A&E agreed when I was took in for something else , I’m waiting for a hospital appointment which the dentist has arranged, no i don’t smoke and I’m very careful now what I eat ,my sister suffered with a dry mouth during her menopause but hers went after a while, I know it’s not cure able just wondered if anyone found anything that helped .

Can you link to the meno site please? There are some sites that are not reputable as they want to sell products .

I have never heard of this, ever, in all my years writing about meno.
I've googled and there are some sites including the Mayo Clinic and the NHS sites which have info on this but meno is not on the list.

No dr would give you HRT for a dry or burning mouth.

JinglingHellsBells · 19/02/2019 08:57

What I mean is, it's unlikely a dr would give you HRT JUST for burning mouth, unless you have other symptoms as well in which case it's different.

Emerald13 · 19/02/2019 09:04

I had this symptom during my peri and it was because the sudden loss of estrogen, was about 26 or even less.
My doc actually said that maybe it was a symptom of stress or diabetes but fortunately it was the estrogen loss that caused it.

cherrytree63 · 19/02/2019 09:06

I just googled it and it can be due to hormonal changes amongst other things.
But have you considered reflux? I have GERD and generally burning mouth (feels as if I've used industrial strength toothpaste) is my only symptom, rarely do I feel anything in my chest or stomach.

JinglingHellsBells · 19/02/2019 09:40

Sorry- missed the fact you are already on HRT. It should help if it's linked to meno.

Kate197048 · 19/02/2019 09:46

The website is yours.co.uk, I’m 49 nearly and have other symptoms, I.e irregular periods, anxiety, insomnia, everything other than the hot sweats , I’m waiting on blood test results i on had Friday just check on anything else I’ve been extremely nauseous which we think is down to sertraline he put me on for anxiety, I took it for 10 days but just wasn’t suiting not me, I’ve now come off it after seeing the doctor yesterday, I’ve also had bloods for meno and they came back equivocal.

@Kate197048 Hi. I appreciate this is an old post but I am interested to find out if HRT or anything else resolved your Burning Mouth Syndrome? Also, did it help at all with your GERD? Thanks.

Kate197048 · 15/02/2021 19:21

Hi there , as yet I haven’t tried hrt but as soon as I get a couple of other health issues sorted out I’m going to give it ago , my consultant at maxilofacial thinks it’s definitely worth trying , currently I’m on gabapentin and have been 17 months which helps a bit , more so with the head and facial pain not so with the burning mouth .

Thanks for replying. Ah, sorry I thought you had started the hrt and I was curious if it had helped. I've been taking Nortriptyline for BMS, it takes the edge off so it helps a bit, and also chewing gum helps. Good luck getting your health issues resolved!

@Kate197048 Have you tried changing your toothpaste? Most have something in them that affects the mucous membranes in your mouth esp cheeks, inner lips and tongue. Strips of skin were peeling off mine. There is a dry mouth toothpaste that I am using all the time now. It's (obviously) more expensive but no more peeling, soreness or burning

abovedecknotbelow · 08/09/2022 12:44

There's just been a segment on this on a call in on This Morning. I wasn't listening as I only have it on in the background when working but you may be able to get it on catch up?

AnnaMagnani · 08/09/2022 12:47

At 49, with irregular periods, bloods are irrelevant in diagnosing menopause. It just is menopause!

I hope you get some help from HRT

Olly2021 · 09/09/2022 15:24

It could be a number of things. I would recommend you contact your GP as they should do blood tests for any deficiencies. I don't think normal burning mouth syndrome causes sores or a burning throat - are the sores like ulcers? Do you have any other symptoms such as reflux or digestive issues? Any family history of celiac? I believe celiac can cause mouth problems. Or it could be an allergy. I'm certainly no expert, but I think it is one for the GP to investigate.

Sisisisi · 09/09/2022 15:30

My Dentist ( not from UK)told me that dry/ burning mouth can be due to the menopause and as well as being distressing can lead to gum recession and tooth loss.
My mouth was deteriorating rapidly and I lost a tooth.
He told me I must take HRT or risk losing my teeth-went on it for other reasons also.
Have had zero issues since HRT.
