Stopping HRT - gradually or cold turkey?

The tablet I’m on isn’t being manufactured anymore. I’ve been on HRT for 6 years and thought I’d take the opportunity of the tablet being unavailable, to see what I’m like without it.

I’m 58 and my last period was about 2 years ago.

The GP said to just stop when I finish this pack. I’m a bit concerned that such a sudden change will bring back the flushes, sweats and aches with a vengeance though.

He said if symptoms return to the point I’m struggling again I can go on something different but I was surprised at the advice to just stop. Has anyone on here got any experience of doing this? Thanks.

The medical advice from specialists is you taper off slowly . That might be a lower dose for 6 months ( a different brand) or reducing the dose by dropping the number of tablets per month (under supervision if it's a bleed-type HRT so you don't upset the ratio of the two hormones in the cycle.)

Thanks Jingling. He didn’t seem to know much about it but I’m not happy to stop just like that. I will make an appointment with another gp at the practice I think.
