I have to stop my HRT...!

Argh!

I've been on oestrogen patches and utrogestan tabs for 2 years. I'm 56. As HRT, it works!

However, I got a bit of occasional bleeding now and then over the past few months. I tried using the progesterone tabs PV to get a more accurate dosage, but I'm not sure it helped, and the sticky mess was annoying.

Like many, I coudn't get a GP appt for love nor money (I drive to work between 8.30 and 9 am on Monday, when the appointments can be booked!), but I got a 'proper' period bleed a few weeks back, so I persevered.

My GP has told me to stop HRT- not dead, but to gradually ease off over 6 weeks to see if the (occasional) bleeding stops, which makes perfect sense. She's sending me for a TVS (U/S); again, as expected; but she examined me (this is all by-the-by) and found a polyp at my cervix (this'll be the third time!) which she felt was too big for her to sort, again, fair enough, so off to the gynae hospital for that.

Obviously we hope that either the polyp has been bleeding; or the bleeding stops once I come off HRT.

But I am not looking forward to the next 6 weeks!

If all is clear, as in, it's not something nasty; I may discuss getting a coil.

Others suggest a copper IUD is better than a Mirena. Any experiences either way? (I assume there's a 'choice', not 'as a PM woman with poor progesterone uptake, you must have THIS coil?).

Anyway, if I kill somebody over the next 6 weeks, it'll be justifiable homicide... won't it?

No court in the land, composed of middle aged women, would convict me! Grin

it sounds a bit extreme to stop your hrt while you wait for the scan etc.
If you have a polyp, don't they think it is the cause of the bleed?

I had 3 episodes of light spotting after 3 years or so on hrt and my gynae consultant- never suggested stopping before I had investigations.

Are you using utrogestan daily or sequentially?

Were you using 100mgs ( 1 capsule) daily or 200mgs for 12 days a month?

Vaginally is supposed to give much better endometrial protection with better absorption, but it's not ideal to use it that way daily.

You can't use a copper coil for part of HRT- it's use is only for birth control. You need the Mirena as it contains a progestogen.

TBH I'd hope your GP would check with a meno consultant before telling you to stop HRT especially as she has already found a large polyp - and they do bleed.
