My health is falling apart...

I’m 48. Suddenly my health is a mess. I have CVS (Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome) but otherwise healthy and usually the CVS episodes are short and only monthly. Suddenly they’re weekly. I bled for 3 weeks which I treated with Tranexamic Acid. I woke with my hip joint in agony (still hurts 3 weeks later). Then I hurt my lower back - sitting on a hay bale too long! Nothing strenuous!! Most days I get either a headache or a migraine. My left eye keeps spasaming, like when your tired, but it’s been going on for months! My neck and shoulders hurt. My vision is just weird and burry. I feel like I’m not quite here. My legs have this weird feeling like they’re excessively tired after a work out but all the time even at night.

I’ve found it difficult to get into the Drs. After waiting a week I finally saw a dr today that looked completely out of her depth. She suggested having a blood test and seeing a GP (what? Was she a receptionist or something?!).

Does this sound like menapause? How do I cope with this? Any advice would be welcome!

Are you overweight at all? I have the heavy leg thing when I'm veering towards fat. I'm 46.

QueenoftheNights · 13/11/2018 12:41

are you periods still regular? Are you getting hot flushes? Any other classic peri symptoms?

Emerald13 · 13/11/2018 14:07

It sounds like peri to me. Check your thyroid and your FSH. A year ago I was convinced that I had a terminal disease, aches, headaches, vision changes, insulin intolerance etc.

Well definitely not as slim as I should be 5’6, size 14. But weight hasn’t changed particularly.

I’ve recently had a period that wouldn’t stop - I treated with Tranexamic Acid (found I could get without prescription). Although I did bleed heavily for a few weeks and could be a little low on iron I can’t believe it would cause this much chaos?

I will ask about thyroid testing on Thursday when I have my blood test. I’ll go google FSH as I don’t know what that is!

I'm Peri and can sympathise with all those symptoms, even the funny trembling eye thing!!

swingofthings · 14/11/2018 05:46

Also had similar symptoms for the last 3 years and now know that the culprit to it all is my poor quality sleep which accumulated over the years.

I’m 45 and apart from the vomiting have almost identical symptoms. I’ve mentioned these to my gp but he just looks at me as though I’m a hypochondriac! I asked if I could be in perimenopause but he says that as I have regular (although horribly heavy) periods I can’t be in peri. And that was the end of the conversation!

Just looking on here and apart from the sickness I am the same even down to the constant twitchy eye. Pins and needles in my neck and shoulders and generally feel crap and achey, can't sleep (now hot flushes though).
I have also started to feel a bit jittery and shaky at night. That feels like it's to do with blood sugar (just had tea with sugar and a couple of biscuits and feel shocking now) Is that a thing too?
I went about 5 months with no periods then I seem to have had a light ish one for the last few months.
Can the GP do anything? . It's awful as I spend a lot of time thinking of have a terminal illness. Even confirmation that it is peri menopause and nothing sinister would make me feel a bit better.

Waspnest · 21/11/2018 11:28

Yes I feel as if I'm falling apart a bit and yes I think it is (indirectly) because of the perimenopause (I turn 50 very soon). My periods have become very heavy but because I use a mooncup I don't think I realised just how bad they were (some days I lose more than 60 ml of blood which is more than the average person loses over their entire period).

I get restless legs occasionally (when I forget to take iron tablets) and definitely crave ice. Recently I've also started getting a really itchy neck and scalp and after reading how that can be a sign of liver/kidney problems or leukaemia/lymphoma (!) I've now read it can be a sign of iron-deficient anaemia!

Despite exercising regularly I also still feel breathless going upstairs.
So my plan of action is to go to GP and get blood tests and also ask if I can take progesterone in some form (preferably not the Mirena) to stop the horrendous bleeding. I've also started taking vit D because I read most people are vit D deficient in winter.

A friend has suffered from IBS for years and she recently went to a private gynae (well known apparently) and she was told that the IBS could be hormone related. She's been on HRT for a few months now and the IBS has gone. I think a lot of these things are hormone related and symptoms are more linked than we think.

I have all those symptoms and they started last year when I was 49. It was 3 months of frequent visits to gp and a&e before one doctor said it was peri menopause and everything fell into place. Prior to her saying that I was convince I had something terminal!

I can now cope with symptoms although seem to have developed health anxiety..

My eye has been funny for a few days, or maybe weeks not too sure. This evening I decided it must be my retina detaching! But having googled it, I think it is probably menopause related, although will probably ring my lovely optician tomorrow to ask her.

stargazer, I gave up have any caffeine in the evenings as found it made me really jittery and stopped sleep. I am awake now as stupidly had a coffee at 8pm...
