Refused hrt

Hi everyone - I hope I don’t bore you all. I’m feeling pretty upset frustrated and angry. I had a total hysterectomy three years ago but kept my ovaries (age 41) following a cancer scare. Turned out it wasn’t cancer - but that’s another story - since my op I have really suffered with low mood, tiredness, night sweats, brain fog, tearfulness and other menopausal symptoms. Initially I thought it was my body recovering, then I thought my thyroid - I have been to the docs at least 6 times since my op - I have had so many blood tests but they always come back normal. I finally saw a dr who seemed willing to help me - she felt sure it was my hormones and was going to prescribe me estrogen only hrt. I was so thrilled to finally get some help - the day came for my test results....and guess what.....my lovely dr has b is now sick and they do not know when she will return! I spoke to another female dr but she said my results were low but ‘normal’ and she would not feel comfortable prescribing me the hrt and if I want it, I have to wait for my other dr to return - which could be weeks! I have since then read that the blood test is not a reliable way to test for menopause as your levels are so up and down. I want to call them back tomorrow but don’t know what to say. I have all the symptoms and have been suffering for so long. I feel just broken - anyone had the same experience?

Firstly, my sympathy going through such a traumatic operation at such a young age.
I started HRT last week at the age if 54 - to help with mood swings, night sweats etc.
My Dr had no problem prescribing for me

If I were you I would ask why she won't prescribe it for you? Perhaps there is a history of breast cancer or heart disease in your family. If that is not the case, it seems strange to withhold HRT.

If your regular GP is going to be away for a while, perhaps there will be a replacement you can book with. But in the meantime, arm yourself with HRT facts and ask why you shouldn't have it.

Good luck

Thank you - the dr I spoke to today was just going by my test results. That was her reason for not prescribing. I know there are risks - I just want my life back. Good luck x

A total hysterectomy means removing ovaries as well- but you've got yours. Removing the womb tends to accelerate menopause.

You need to find info online, print it off and show it to her that blood tests are unreliable.

I'd find another dr if possible. If the one you saw is the only one available then you need to ask for a referral to a menopause specialist or a menopause clinic. Refuse to leave until the offer something if they don't want to prescribe.

I started hrt a year ago at 41 with almost regular periods but with severe symptoms. You absolutely need hrt at such a young age. You just replace the estrogen your ovaries don’t produce. Find someone who knows and cares. Hope it helps!
