HRT - what should I be asking the doctor?

Have made the decision to ask my doc to put me on HRT. I’m 46 and have been having low level symptoms for a couple of years, night sweats, worse PMT, insomnia etc. However over the last 6 months they’ve got gradually worse and it’s got to the point where I only feel “well” for one week a month.

I have a mirena coil fitted so no idea how periods have been affected although I have noticed much more pain around what I think is ovulation.

So when I go, what should I be asking? Do I just go with whatever she prescribes and see how I go or is there a particular type I should be pushing for? I’ve been reading up on here and the menopause matters website but there is so much information (and lack of focus is one of my problems!) that I find it all a bit mind blowing!!

Any tips or guidance would be appreciated.

As you have the Mirena already ( and assume it suits you with no side effects) it's dead simple- all you need is estrogen! The Mirena gives your womb lining the protection it needs so it doesn't overgrow with added estrogen.

So...you can ask for oestrogen gel, an estrogen-only patch or a tablet.

The Mirena is licensed as part of HRT for 4 years then you'd need it changed.

Make sure your GP does understand this and doesn't give you a combined HRT which also includes a progestogen or you will be doubling up on that hormone and won't feel great.

Thanks Queen. That’s really useful. I’ve had my mirena in since 2015 so should that still be ok? Or should I ask for it to be changed?

I just had a new Mirena in, and am sure the GP said that for HRT it "expires" earlier. ....four years maybe??
I suppose they are being cautious on the progesterone side, as that combats the oestrogen and its effect on the womb and an older mirena will be less effective in that regard.
