Hot flushes

What do they feel like?

From what I have read it is an intense feeling of heat with sweating. Obvious red flush and very uncomfortable.

I am 50 and am definitely in peri now - on Vagifem, and my regular cycle has started to go a bit awry.

Recently I have noticed thatI get very warm all over but it's not a clammy feeling, no excess sweating ?

To confuse matters we have recently moved house and haven't yet figured out the central heating timer ;) Also have started a new diet plan which has me eating loads to boost metabolism ? So either of those could contribute.

I just wondered if my symptom were likely to be hot flushes. I keep asking if anyone else is warm and telling DH to turn off the heating. In fairness I am usually the one rushing round the house doing jobs whilst he is working, seated at his desk.

I think everyone's are different so it's what they are like for you.

Mine were like blushing; feeling slightly odd before it started, a bit kind of 'anxious' for a few seconds, then the heat would start in my neck and work upwards so I ended up looking red and with a sweaty upper lip.

Once an hour on the whole every day, so after around 4 months, went onto HRT which also helped re establish my sleep pattern which had gone haywire. (By then I was heading to 53.)

My hot flushes are just a feeling of warmth all over. I happened to be in the bathroom with no clothes on, getting into the shower. I looked at myself in the mirror out of curiosity. Looking at me you could not tell, no sweat or even any redness anywhere. They only last a few seconds. I don't feel anxious when they come, just a bit annoyed. I weirdly feel them more intensely on the upper arm, the outside bit. One of my friends used to get really bad flushes. She had been on HRT and stop because of scare stories. The flushes really impacted on her life and marriage so she went back on it. I asked her to tell me when she was having a bad hot flush, when she had one you could not tell physically that she was having one, no sweat or flushing. So I think the severity and symptom of a flush differ. Yours sound like mine.

Mine were like yours OP. Just a general feeling of being warm all the time, and needing fewer layers of clothing than everyone else.

Thanks for all replies.

So it could be that I am experiencing the not flushes then.

I can manage them if that's as bad as they get I guess.

The joys... Confused

I had a lot of these overheating symptoms when younger (teens, 20s) but seem to decrease as I get older.

InfiniteVariety · 05/11/2018 22:18

3 years ago I began to get this and I found that cutting out stimulants (coffee, alcohol & sugar) was very effective in reducing it dramatically. After about a year I tentatively reintroduced them and found the symptoms did not return. I'm 59 now and only occasionally wake up feeling very hot and it never happens during the day

Bellaciao · 07/11/2018 13:15

legolimb - you'll know them for sure when they happen. I had this overheating and thought is this what hot flushes are? No way! Ditto night sweats and the inital overheating until menopause got well under way. They were much more intense and absolutely unmistakeable. Maybe some women never actually get them.

Sarcelle · 07/11/2018 17:50

Mine started mild, plateaued but suddenly they have ramped up in intensity. Especially during the night. No sweating, just intense heat. If I have a coffee I get one almost immediately.

marvelmum · 08/11/2018 13:48

I could have wrote this myself. But a few people have got this who I know so how do I know its menopause. Even I definitely think I'm peri, but the aches and pains could this be just a cold. I'm dizzy too, is this a symptom?

legolimb · 08/11/2018 14:22

Interesting replies - thanks to all.

So it does seem like it could get worse - or stay as is. I haven't noticed it as much this past few days, but I've kept the heating off ?
