Changes to hair texture and volume

Two years ago I noticed that my hair volume had diminished considerably. I went to the GP and they ran some bloods which showed my ferritin level was low. I've always had really heavy periods and had taken up running the year before so decided it was a combination of the two (I had also fallen over a couple of times and problems with leg weakness).

So I began iron supplements and later Vitamin D supplements (as that too turned out to be low). I also saw a dermatologist who suggested I try to keep my ferritin levels high indefinitely, although she admitted there wasn't much of an evidence base for cranking levels up and hair regrowing at its original thickness.

My hair used to be very thick. I'd regularly have it thinned at the hairdressers.

Two years on and my hair has totally changed in texture. It feels like candy floss. And it continues to fall out at the same rate (100-200 strands a day). The volume is at least 50% what it was 2-3 years ago.

It's not really female pattern hair loss as I have good cover everywhere. But it feels like the regrowth is not able to play catch up as it continues to tumble out (it's wrecking my hoover, dishwasher etc.!). It was diagnosed by two dermatologists as chronic telogen effluvium.

So I'm starting to conclude maybe it's hormone-related. I don't have many other menopausal symptoms (I'm in my mid 40s). My periods - still heavy - are like clockwork (bar last month, mind!).

Are others experiencing this kind of symptom?

If I could work out some sort of trigger, I'd address it but I feel like all the doctors I've seen - GPs and specialists - have drawn a blank.

I'm shamelessly placrmarking because mine is very similar. I'm 44 and ferritin levels are 28, up from 8, six months or so ago. Doctor not especially helpful, have had iron tablets, hence the increase in ferritin level but no improvement. I bought the perfectil vitamins for hair, which I'm still taking, in the hope of keeping iron levels up.

Was wondering whether going on the pill would help. Maybe having lighter periods would stop up losing so much iron.

As well as iron levels, have you had your thyroid function tested, OP? I’m 51, still peri’ so far as I can tell (periods appearing at random and apparently on a whim) and my hair does seem ‘different’. It used to be really thick and is probably now ‘average’ and doesn’t feel as heavy. I’m using a caffeine shampoo but couldn’t really say if that’s had any effect so far. Menopause can be such a difficult experience! All the emotional stuff and things like this too! Flowers

I haven't got the same problem but came on to say my hair has definitely changed since I went through the menopause. It has got more and more curly , I never realised hormones could have such an effect on hair.

Yes, thyroid was checked when I had all the bloods that revealed the low ferritin and it was OK.

My GP has been trying to persuade me to get a Mirena coil but I've resisted because I reacted so badly to the mini pill in my early 20s. Developed a whole hoard of ME type symptoms that took me ages to overcome once I came off the pill.

My ferritin came up fast on supplements but then GP cut back dose and it went down again (although never bottomed out as it had before). I'm less convinced that it going up has had any impact whatsoever on my hair.

What I'd do for a curl, though! My hair has been super straight forever. I know everyone aspires to this right now but I'd love a curl...

Grass is always greener, eh?
