Melatonin ?

Has anyone tried melatonin for menopause insomnia? I’ve taken advantage of being in the US to buy a huge bottle of melatonin gummies to see if I can finally sleep after what feels like years on the verge of insanity due to sleeplessness. I’m not sure why we can’t buy it in the U.K., people seem to literally eat them like sweets here. One night in and I did sleep better but feel a bit sluggish in the morning. I feel like an international drug smuggler at the moment, menopause vitamins from the U.K. because they are horribly expensive here and melatonin to the U.K. because you can’t buy it.

Tried it, I am immune so didn't make any difference. But I never felt guilty about bringing it back to UK. Just play stupid if they catch you "But it was so cheap!"

I tried it but I'd take a v small dose to start. Most times I took it I'd get 4/5 hours decent sleep but one night I took a bigger dose (10mg) and I felt I was lying there with my body asleep but my brain whirring. HRT resolved my insomnia.

Yes, I used the gummies for menopause insomnia for a few months. They worked well but affected my blood sugars so I had to stop them.

You can order them from Biovea in the uk, they’re sent from the US but not very expensive.

I tried it ordered from biovea. It worked a little at the start as I fell asleep quicker but didn't help with the issue of waking up in the night wide awake. After a few weeks it stopped even helping with falling asleep and gave it up.

It’s really staying asleep that I want to achieve, I can usually fall asleep. I’ve been travelling a lot and drinking more alcohol which always means I sleep badly, so it’s difficult to tell if I’m seeing any difference. I feel a bit sluggish, but I could just be tired. I think I’ll persist for a while no things are more settled.

HRT is the only thing that helped me. I have a cupboard full of melatonin as you can buy it in supermarkets in France.

It does help me to drop off though, but as you say too much and you feel sluggish. I ended up having half a capsule, with the contents in a small hot chocolate before bedtime. for months to try and get myself back into a pattern.

I’m lucky that this is my only bothersome symptom (now that I’ve given in and only wear very comfy and sensible shoes to deal with aching feet) so I was hoping to treat just that symptom. Melatonin sounded like just the thing.

I’ve used it occasionally and it does send me into a nice deep sleep with absolutely no side effects of feeling sluggish. I use liquid form of it the bottle lasts ages too.

Aroundtheworldandback · 02/10/2018 22:55

I live in uk and was prescribed melatonin privately. Doesn’t do much for me even a 10mg dose. Makes me a little drowsy but nothing compared to nitol.

swingofthings · 03/10/2018 05:50

Haha Around, I could have written this. 10mg here too only make me a bit drowsy. Sleep has been eluding me once again and after 5 bad nights, resorted to nytol last night. Problem is, although, it works getting me to sleep, it doesn't help at all with getting more deep sleep so I still wake feeling totally drained. Better than being awake all night though!

Aroundtheworldandback · 05/10/2018 17:09

I agree Swing- taking something occasionally must be better than than what continued sleep.deprevation must do.

So I am finally back to normal life after weeks of travel, jet lag, illness and other nonsense. I’ve taken 10mg of melatonin a few times and definitely had better sleep. I do wake up at the usual 3am but get back to sleep fairly quickly. I do have a quite unpleasant “drugged” feeling when I wake in the middle of the night but I feel fine in the morning. I also don’t seem to need to pee in the night, I can barely remember a night without getting up to the loo so that is amazing. I don’t want to take it every night but I think it is helpful for me at the moment. I have also cut right back on caffeine, and gone through some fairly unpleasant withdrawal symptoms, which is also probably helping. Now if I could cure DH’s snoring...

That's great news chemenger. I too have found finally something that works for me 5htp. It regulated serotonin and indeed I'd come to the conclusion that my issue was relating to serotonin. None only am I sleeping better but my brain seems so much calmer overall. I don't feel as hyper alertvand that alone is a real blessing. Sadly, that state of relaxing has come with the onset of a cold!
