Spotting during Peri

I’ve had a couple of days of really mild sporting. I mean like noticing bloody discharge twice in 2 days. Will this count as a period or missed period if I’m counting to 12 months period free?

How long was it after your previous period?

If it's weeks rather than a few days, it's a period.

Why are you so concerned about counting down the 12 months, out of interest? Is there some other reason why you want a definition of being post menopause? (ie a year with no period?)

I understand you want to know whether it's of concern thst requires investigation as spotting within 12 months of last period.

I'm in the same boat. I've had what is count an extremely light period in January. Then about a month ago I had one say of just tiny old blood and again a few days ago. I can tell it links with a period because I can tell it links with some progesterone hike but there is nothing to shed as little oestrogen to build a lining.

I was told by my go that it was normal to have spotting during peri when I saw him about it two years ago and had all tests to rule our anything so am not worrying now.

As to when to count from I think I'll go with what was the closest to an albeit very light period so January.

You don't need any investigations of spotting during peri if it's possibly a light period. You would need to see your GP if you'd gone 12 months or longer with no period and then had some bleeding.

Thanks all. I have only gone about 11 weeks max with no period but the general rule of thumb is that 12 mths period free is what puts you into the actual menopause category rather than peri menopause. As I have some spotting I wondered whether to count that as a period and mark it on my calendar so I have a vague idea of where I am! I have already ruled out any problems as I recently had scans and bloods done for other symptoms. This perimenopause/menopause thing is a bloody pain the arse (pardon the pun!)

The issue queen is when you start to count the 12 months from, the last proper period or from the time of last tiny spotting.

The difference between what can count as a period and what counts as spotting is not always obvious.

Thespian I've decided to count from the last time I had red blood for two days even though it was very light rather than what I consider spotting which is darker blood and not continuous. I am also watching that the spotting is not linked to sexual activity.

ThespianTendencies · 07/09/2018 13:43

So confusing isn’t it. There’s no difinitive sign.

No but it's easy to know if you have gone 12 months without any bleeding at all.

The underlying issue is that post menopausal bleeding is something women need to have checked out.

If someone has gone for 12 months and then has spotting, it needs investigating. If they are still having periods - and one was 11 months ago- then they have spotting, it's unlikely to be anything sinister.

But it's all a guide. They have to have a cut-off point somewhere. Most women will not have another period after a 12 month gap. But some will- after 13, or 15 or even more months and all may be healthy and 'normal'. It's just ON AVERAGE most won't have any after 12 months.

Queen what is the difference between blood and spotting? Or are you saying that until we stop spotting the 'clock' hasn't started? So in my case had some spotting last week, the clock restarts from then?

QueenoftheNights · 08/09/2018 11:10

You start counting when you start to miss a period. A missed period can be one that has gone AWOL or you may notice a very light period which is no more than spotting.

If the bleeding /spotting you had last week comes more than 12 months after the last episode of spotting / bleeding, you see your GP.

Every time you have any blood, of any amount, you keep counting. One day you will look back and find you have not had anything for 12 months or more.

If after that time you have any bleeding you need a scan to check it's not cancer.
