Vagisil

In desperation, I've been out this afternoon and bought both the internal and external versions of Vagisil.

No instructions really on how to use the external one, but I'll. give it a go.

Has anyone else tried it and had good results? Reviews on Amazon look promising.

Thanks

what are you hoping it will do? what are your symptoms?

NaToth · 25/08/2018 20:18

I have vaginal atrophy. Vagifem is ineffective. GP has now referred me to Gynaecology, who say if Vagifem is not effective, "other vulval conditions should be investigated." whatever that means.

In the meantime, despite still using the Vagifem, I am really sore and have not been able to have sex in comfort since 2014.

Haven't we had this conversation before when you had another user name? I left you a link to a long running thread on menopause matters to show you how women there are using Vagifem daily (as it's now half the strength it was a while back- now only 10mgs) and the advice there was to use it daily.

Gynaecology won't be able to offer anything more except more Vagifem or Ovestin and adding in systemic HRT- 25% of women HAVE to use both. Your GP could sort all of this if you ask and inform them if they are clueless.

QueenoftheNights · 25/08/2018 21:31

here is the thread again; you can see women saying their consultants suggested double the dose to get things back to normal.

What have you got to lose by trying that?

NaToth · 25/08/2018 22:04

Yes, that was me.

I did the loading and then twice a week. It was never really right. I spoke to the GP again and she said to up it to three times a week, which was still not ideal, but she wrote to Gynaecology to check that was Ok and they said it wasn't, so she told me to go back to twice a week and, at their suggestion, she has referred me, but I haven't heard anything yet. GP also told me I was too old for HRT, although I am only four years past menopause.

I would use the Vagifem more often, but of course I don't have enough.

I wondered if the Vagisil might help. It's getting desperate frankly.

I think you need to be more assertive with your GP. Take her the NICE guidelines which state you are not too old for HRT. Point out that Vagifem is now half the strength it was until about a year ago. or just use it more often and put in for a repeat. It takes months and months to correct bad atrophy- loading for 2 weeks then using it twice a week won't be enough. I found my bladder only improved a bit after 6 months.

I know we have been through this before, but why not consider seeing a private gynae? Louise Newson is Midlands/ and if you can get to London there are plenty of experts.

NaToth · 26/08/2018 08:22

Yes, I'm working towards going private. It was just that I'd been in so much discomfort over the last week that I thought I'd try Vagisil and I wondered if anyone else had used it.

I'm not inclined to g back to my GP with this, that's for sure. In fact, she told me something else that was incorrect in the same consultation, so I probably need a different GP.

The thing is her conversation with 'gynaecology' is meaningless. She may have had an email exchange or whatever with someone almost straight out of med school, working as a registrar in gynae, who knows little about menopause. Not all consultants know about menopause in detail. They all have their areas of expertise. You need someone who knows about menopause and is a meno expert.
I understand your pain and frustration but it's down to you to move this along if your GP is useless.

I'm pretty sure I'm in perimenopause (lots of usual symptoms but can't tell about periods because I've had the implant since DS was born and haven't had a period / bled for 12 years).

I've just started experiencing vaginal dryness and itching. Does vagisil help with this?

Would a trip to the docs (maybe practice nurse) for a blood test help diagnose menopause?

NaToth · 29/08/2018 09:12

@QueenoftheNights, do you have a link to the appropriate part of the NICE guidelines please? I can't find the but I need.

Thanks.

I don't know which pprt you are looking for.

Sorry but I don't have time at the moment. if it's starting HRT over 60 there is plenty online- check the BMS site, NICE , or put the key words you want into google. Also look at the website of Dr Louise Newson and google the topic with Nick Panay in the search line.
