6 months no period, now gushing - will it stop?

Uuurgh 😩

I can go months without a period. Six months is the latest record. Slight bleed starts last weekend, which is fine because I've been feeling sore and PMTish for a while. Expecting a light period like the last one I had in February (5month gap that time).

Come Wednesday I'm gushing and it's still going. Will it stop?! Exhausted. Taking iron, ponstan.

Have had v recent gynae checks; 4cm fibroid which I've had for years, small cyst which they're not concerned about. Consultant said endometrium was slightly thickened but what he'd expect after no menstruation. I'm using Ovestin for bladder issues, suspect that has something to do with this.

To think I used to put up with this every month! Finding it hard to cope and worry there's going to be no end to this. I got used to no period so possibly panicking unnecessarily. If there's six month's worth to come out do I just sit tight? (On a towel whilst wearing big reinforced knickers). Is the Ovestin messing things up?
Thanks in advice for any advice/reassurance!

That’s typical peri menopause - uncertainty and it was a long time before I was able to confidently go out without protection.

Can you take tranxeemic (sp) acid? I used that and also norithesterine (sp) Blush

The ovestin is such a teeny dose i really don’t think that’s causing the bleeding. Do you take any hrt?

I had a friend who ended up with a hysterectomy because of extremely heavy unpredictable bleeding she says it was the best thing ever. Hope it eases off soon

When you say gushing, could you go into a bit more detail? How many pads/tampons are you going through in a day? I think if you're at the point where your sitting on the towel, it's probably extremely heavy you maybe need to think about calling 111 to see if you can get an out of hours appointment.

Are you in pain at all? I'm wondering if maybe it's not a period as such, but if the cyst has popped.

Oops, thanks in advance, not advice

I'm varying between 50 days and 25 days in my cycle, with a 3 day light bleed or a 7 day heavy bleed and no way of anticipating which.

Hopefully you are nearly there, and won't have to do this again!

Thanks for replies!

Ive been thinking about tranxemic acid @HeckinGoodDoggo. Hoping this won't be a regular occurrence and I won't have to consider surgery. If it's 'normal' peri then I somewhat reassured!

@TheresSomebodyAtTheDoooorrr partly joking with the towel comment though I am sleeping on one just in case, I have had a couple of leaks. A super tampon lasts about an hour, lilets super plus extra 2-3 hours though one saw me through last night fine. So while it's heavy im not sure if it's emergency heavy? I did wonder about the popped cyst - I've been sore/bit crampy and cyst side is niggling but no sudden or extreme cramps or pain (which I did experience when I had normal menstruation). Pain is more low level discomfort and I probably wouldn't be bothering with painkillers, I'm only hoping ponstan reduces the flow.

Even if you got a drs appt there is little they can do. it will stop, yes. You need to take the tranx acid, and you can also use Ibuprofen which will have the same effect (check with pharma is you can use both together.)

Longer term, if it keeps happening, have a blood test for your iron levels. if it keep happening for years maybe you need a Mirena to sort it?

QueenoftheNights · 25/08/2018 10:38

and Ovestin won't have caused this; a year of Ovestin use is the same as a 1mg tablet ( a daily dose.) of estrogen HRT.

EllenRipley · 25/08/2018 10:48

Thankyou @picklemepopcorn I cannot WAIT for this all to be over...I thought I'd feel a bit sad when my periods stopped and now I'm furious it's come back!

That sounds like a pain in the butt, I hope it all settles down for you.

I sleep on a towel, wearing a mooncup and a washable san pad. Joy. Tranexamic acid is your friend, and ibuprofen if you can.

EllenRipley · 25/08/2018 11:01

@QueenoftheNights Thankyou... it's reassuring for folk to say the Ovestin isn't causing this, it's the only thing that's helping my bladder! I think my fibroid was slightly bigger on the last scan and I immediately thought 'I bet it's the Ovestin' but it could just be normal fluctuations.

I agree the doc couldn't/wouldn't do much, especially given I've had such recent gynae consultations and scans. If the cyst has popped I think I'm beyond any intervention at this stage. I really hope this isn't a new pattern. I know Mirena works for a lot of women but I've always had major reactions to hormonal contraception stuff and at this stage in life I'd rather let things be (up to a point!).

I had surgery a couple of years ago for adhesions caused by c section and a small cyst removed - surgeon didn't see any endometriosis but says they can 100% rule it out, though I honestly don't think that's been my problem. He rather shockingly suggested a full hysterectomy for no other reason than just to see if it helped - at that point I had no other issues than usual peri stuff and the cyst so I was quite offended at his attitude (that's a whole other thread!).

@picklemepopcorn oh god, it all gets so undignified! My son keeps asking why I'm sleeping on a towel. I have a mooncup, I might bring it out of retirement. Will def see doc next week and get some tran acid.

Thankyou all, this has been helpful and I feel less panicked.

And @QueenoftheNights yes I will keep an eye on my iron 👍

You can buy tranx acid over the counter in Boots- send someone out for it! Not sure if it's under a brand name but they will know.

PeridotCricket · 25/08/2018 11:14

Ibuprofen helps too. When I flooded it lasted a couple of days. I needed lots of iron after and i went on hrt. If that hadn't worked then mirena was next option.

JessBradleyTheBusStopWanker · 28/08/2018 10:45

I totally understand where you are on this OP. I am 38. 2016/2017 my periods were varying between incredibly heavy for 20 days to barely spotting for 2 days. My smear was fine last month. The last 11 months I havent seen a thing.

We went camping on Friday morning, I bent over to put the tent up and I just knew I was going to come on. Within minutes I was saturated, had to hide in the tent while my OH made an emergency dash to the supermarket. I went through 40 super plus tampons and 24 super night time towels by the time we got home Monday lunch. It has been awful. Losing all manner of material, barely able to move and having to pee in a bucket in a tent.

I can't wait for this to all just stop. And my body is desperately trying to convince me to have another baby, I'm plagued with baby dreams and have the most intense urges to get pregnant. I do NOT want another baby. NO! But I cant stop day dreaming. I feel like I have been body snatched.

EllenRipley · 28/08/2018 12:58

Oh @JessBradleyTheBusStopWanker you poor thing, that sounds awful! Has it settled? I had the same baby urges a few years ago. It's very confusing, being 'body snatched' is exactly right.

Are you taking iron? You are (relatively) young to be going through such hardcore peri-meno, have you seen GP/gynae?

My bleeding has calmed right down to a trickle but I'm still sore and absolutely exhausted. Going through that (while camping 😩) after 11 months must be horrendous! I hope it's eased off and you're taking it easy. (I am on the couch) x
