I had an MRI on my lower back and one of the things that showed up was 'enlarged uterus due to know fibroids'
Does anyone have experience of this?

Yes I had a 7 month uterus, my main fibroid Eric was 6 pounds. If my memory serves there are 4 kinds of fibroids I had all 4. I had horrendous bleeding, multiple transfusions then a hysterectomy. All great now, what’s the question?

Mummytron · 12/07/2018 21:32

I don't know really 😁
I guess I just wondered how common it is? Whether I should be doing anything about it? It was found because of an mri for my arthritis and just and a letter stating it.
Yours sounds incredible!

Also did yours get bigger for any reason? I think mine is hormones due to perimenopause

I had 2 hystercoscopies, 2 myomectomies & they just kept growing & growing

My problem was the torrential bleeding

If they’re not causing you any problems do you have to do anything with them?

Known fibroids would indicate that someone's been aware of them before.
Is that right?
They should shrink with the menopause or at least not grow. I had them pre kids and for decades with no problems. It depends where they are and the size. If you have no symptoms they are usually best left I think. They are very common.

Yes. Mine was described as bulky. DH was with me when the consultant said it, and has never forgotten it. He sometimes uses it as a joky insult Grin.

I had one large one. The size of a grapefruit. I don’t think you need to do anything unless they are bothering you. I had mine embolised. This is where they do a guided injection to block up the feeder aterery with plastic beads thereby shrinking it. My only regret is not having this done sooner. I had suffered terrible flooding periods for many years, from the age of 40. I had the procedure done at age 50.
Life changing! I am quite slim, with narrow hips and a very short torso. I’m not sure if this is true but imo felt the fibroid was squashing against my eternal organs, as if competing for space. I would always have to be near a loo. If I ran or jumped it felt like a bowling ball in my pelvis pressing on my bladder. Also pressed against my bowels. Always needed the loo urgently when I needed to go. And painful sex too. So if your fibroid is a type they can embolise I’d recommended that route, as I have no more symptoms. I still have periods, but normal ones now.
I could actually see my fibroid if I lay flat and it used to move, like harbouring an alien!
Ps: the operation is not too scary and quite painless. After the op was a different story! I had 24 h of extreme pain, worse than childbirth. And I had servere bruising down one leg, as they go in at the groin. But very short recovery time, and all good after a day or two.

Any woman with a fibroid is going to have a 'bulky' uterus because the fibroid increases the surface area. I have a tiny fibroid and it's been the same size for over 12 years. I'ts about 3cms. On my scan reports it says 'slightly bulky uterus'. It's really nothing to worry about!

Thanks all.
Yes I did know about it, had a couple for years and don't cause any trouble. Never had an enlarged uterus!! Just wondered about it. Thanks for all the advice xx

If they're not causing you any problems, then there's no need to do anything. Hormonal changes after menopause will mean the fibroids shrink and your uterus will return to normal size, or will at least shrink a bit.

I had my mahoosive 5 month pregnancy fibroid whipped out along with the rest of my uterus, fallopian tubes and cervix 18 months ago because it was starting to cause me real issues with bleeding.
