Menopause and Mirena

Hi
I'm not a regular poster, but have been on mumsnet for years.

My GP has confirmed that I appear to be going through menopause (symptoms + bloodtests).

I had my second mirena put in last year. All absolutely fine. My GP wants to take it out as now that I'm going through menopause he doesn't think it's necessary. I'm concerned that I may have periods (even though irregular) and wondering if I should just leave it there for another year or so. Or is there a valid reason for removing the mirena?

Would love to know other people's thoughts or experiences.

thank you!

I am surprised that your GP wants to remove your coil ? It is advisable to keep it in when you hit the menopause due to it providing progesterone.
Either ask your GP for clarification or make an appointment to see a different one .

Um, that's all a bit odd. I'd leave it in til the five years is up. I'm 50 and suppose I'm menopausal, no real way to know, but mine is two years old and I'll keep it all five. Just in case.
You still need contraception, what is the GP proposing you use instead? Until you've had no periods for a year, and even then, you can't assume you're 'safe'.

Agree with @Ophelialovescats, I’m surprised he suggested taking it out. I went to GP about menopausal symptoms yesterday and was offered Mirena! (I went for patches instead). Considering it will give you HRT and will provide effective contraception as well (which other forms of HRT don’t), I would keep it in if I were you.

I’ve just had one put in specifically as part of my hrt (I’m a committed mirena user for the past 24 years).

Thanks! I was thinking the same, but was doubting myself when he said let's take it out. He's about to retire (which may explain everything). I'll leave it in.

Definitely leave it in, if you start getting meno symptoms you can then easily add a estrogen patch/gel.
I use the Mirena for the progesterone component of my HRT and Estrogel for the estrogen.

I spoke to my gp 2 days ago and was she has recommended I keep my Mirena coil in and have it replaced in 2 years to keep up the progesterone for hrt.

NickyNora · 03/07/2018 00:39

Every doctor I've met since going into the menopause has recommended I have a Mirena Coil. Personally its not something I have ever used or intend to!

If it works for you, stick with it!
