Jury service

I am going through perimenopause and my periods are scarily heavy. For 3 days each month I cannot leave the house. It is so severe that I have had to come put of a full time teaching position and do supply so I can stay at home on the worst days. To make matters worse, my cycle varies between 17-24 days so I cannot predict when it will affect me. I am anaemic and have migraines during the first 2 days of it most months. I have been summoned for jury service and I am panicking. The courts make provision for toilet breaks but i won't even be able to get to the court if it is one of my worst days: the furthest I go is to the bird table! Advice please.

Jury service aside, this sounds unbearable. What does your GP say?

BigGreenOlives · 20/05/2018 08:15

I’d write and tell them. I was excused jury duty when I explained I would have to find someone to take my 3 young children to school & walk my dogs - no family living nearby and husband worked overseas.

Bobbybobbins · 20/05/2018 08:16

You can tell them and ask to be excused. Medical evidence may help? I was excused as would have been 2 weeks post birth. I did it when my youngest was a year old instead.

JustbackfromBangkok · 20/05/2018 08:19

Why is your GP not helping you manage this?
I had the same problem btw and was getting seriously anaemic so my gp gave me tablets to stop the bleeding temporarily while arranging a mirena coil. Once that was done I had no more bleeding at all.

GeorgeTheHippo · 20/05/2018 08:19

See your GP, get tranexamic acid and consider the mirena coil

burgundy2 · 20/05/2018 08:56

I will discuss the coil with the GP. So far, I have tried the progesterone only pill but it made the migraines unbearable. Tranexamic acid wreaked havoc with my digestive system. I also have a heart rhythm disorder so the GP is careful when prescribing medication. I have been counting on the fact that my periods will stop soon as I have already had 2 years of this problem!

OP - you need to request an scan of your uterus by your GP. Bleeding like this is not normal, you may have a fibroid. I had exact same as you describe and am 47. I am having my fibroid removed tomorrow!

ParisUSM · 20/05/2018 21:41

Hi Tinkobell, are you getting it removed on the nhs? I was told that wasn't an option if you were past having children and hysterectomy was the only option, which seems drastic. Mine seem to be shrinking anyway now (hopefully not tempting fate here), but would be interested in knowing.

Gold luck tomorrow

burgundy2 · 21/05/2018 05:32

Hi Tinkobell. I was scanned when the problem first occurred as the GP thought fibroids but none were found. Good luck today.

An update in case anyone else is in the same situation: i rang the jury service helpline . The person I spoke to was very understanding. She said that all I need to do is fill in the relevant sections of the form with an explanation of the problem and ask to defer for the maximum allowed time which is a year. If I am still having the same problems 12 months down the line, I ask to be excused. I explained to her that no amount of comfort breaks at the court would be of any help as I would not be able to travel there on my worst days. She said not to worry, just explain on the form. What a relief!
