Phantom periods

Anyone had any in the run up to menopause? I'm on day 57 of my cycle and have had two phantom periods during this time. Can anyone explain what's going on - is it that I'm still going through the same sort of hormonal changes I would during a normal period, but not strong enough to have a build up of lining and then bleed?

I'm not sure what do you mean by phantom periods? If you have not ovulated then you will not produce progesterone so any symptoms you are experiencing will not be due to that. You are likely to go through cycles where your ovaries attempt to get a follicle to ripen (ie recruit a dominant follicle) and during this time you will be producing oestrogen. This can continue until eventually you may well ovulate (or not). I think of it like bubbling porridge. As your oestrogen rsies and falls then you may well experience various symptoms.

I mean having period pain with no period, as well as other tell tale signs that used to mean a period was due.

Haven't ovulated in months and now back to hot flushes so maybe my body's given up trying for now. On holiday tomorrow so here's hoping as I really hate the unpredictability.

From what I have read, it is a peri-meno 'thing'. I didn't have a period for five months and it still felt like I had a cycle without the bleed. Then they started again earlier this year. Thought I'd be glad to see them back but have realised I felt better without them! Anyway, while it may be the normal course of your menopausal hormones I would still check in with your GP to make sure the cramps etc aren't caused by any other gynae issues.
