I want to be a Japanese woman! 😂
I think that there are more parameters for handling menopause except diet. Japanese women have different genetics, different culture and philosophy of life, they see aging with a different way than we do and have different coping strategies as well.

CrabappleBiscuit · 31/03/2018 10:55

There’s been some debate about the fact that Japanese women do suffer proportionally the same in the menopause. It’s society pressure not to talk about it. Also a high incidence of osteoporosis.

CrabappleBiscuit · 31/03/2018 10:55

Also, the source is slightly partial.

ParisUSM · 31/03/2018 11:08

Yeah, seems more likely to be down to cultural differences.

as I have mentioned in other threads
HRT is not used by everyone - before it was widely prescribed for hot flushes as you aged you just got on with it - diet, exercise and anything that helped
How do you all think your mothers, grandmothers coped? Hmm
It is necessary for a limited time to help overcome the worst aspects of the menopause (some women are more affected than others) but taking HRT is not the only way to avoid nasty illnesses as we age.

Biologifemini · 31/03/2018 11:16

I was under the impression that the Japanese eat a lot more soy products (which contain phytoestrogens) and more fish.
And consequently less meat.
There may be a reasonable biochemical explanation as well- with regards to phytoestrogens.

ParisUSM · 31/03/2018 11:18

Yes, it's interesting thinking about the different way we deal with age. Here, menopause is treated as something to make jokes about, and we are conditioned to fight ageing. It is something to almost feel ashamed about. I don't think women from previous generations would be able to get their heads around having HRT induced periods in their 60s and above.

CrabappleBiscuit · 31/03/2018 13:48

Mollie and Paris. I remember my mum suffering greatly with menopause symptoms. As have I.

Women who are managing or don’t have symptoms aren’t going to be as likely to be looking on forums for help as those who are struggling.

My symptoms were debilitating, with hrt they are managed.

Emerald13 · 31/03/2018 14:10

I'm absolutely with you Crab.
Taking hrt is an attitude. It depends on how we want to live our lives, the way we want to age and how comfortable is for us to take the risks. My mum was on Tibolone for many many years, she is 67, healthy and looks 10 years younger at least! Her mother had severe osteoporosis, she died 97 but with poor quality of life!
I don't care what did the past generations, life and science just go on!

3luckystars · 31/03/2018 14:13

Maybe they do but can’t complain about it as much.

I’d like to find out a bit more about it. Thank you for posting.

DailyWailEatsSnails · 31/03/2018 15:47

OP's link: "only 7 percent of menopausal Japanese women suffer from hot flashes, as compared to 55 percent of women living in the United States,"

22% get hot flashes says this (2005 academic peer-review) article. That's only women aged 45-55, so many not actually menopausal yet, right? Says peak incidence was 52.7% among the older perimenopausal women in the survey.

Oxfordblue · 03/04/2018 14:37

I believe they don't 'suffer' with menopause because they don't eat diary.

I do eat dairy but really think I shouldn't but haven't managed to get myself organised to not do so.

Bellaciao · 03/04/2018 17:11

Do you have any information on this Oxford Blue - because the only study I found (admittedly only just had a very quick look) implied the reverse ie that consumption of dairy products by Japanese women might delay natural menopause?

Oxfordblue · 03/04/2018 17:59

No, but their diet is (or was very different) to western.
In fact at the pharmacy the other day, the pharmacy manager was telling me, she was Asian & they don't suffer from menopause, because of their diet.

Can you imagine the implications of the impact on menopause? It would be blocked, refuted, ridiculed.

DailyWailSucksSnails · 05/04/2018 10:15

Most Chinese people (living in China) eat milk-free diets, right?

Here's a whole study on their risk factors for hot flashes. There must be plenty of them with flashes to make the results meaningful. More education, more omnivorous diet & less exercise were linked to fewer flashes.

Justanotherzombie · 05/04/2018 10:17

Japanese women also suffer disproportionately from morning sickness. The research I read said maybe due to small body weight.

DailyWailSucksSnails · 05/04/2018 11:08

I found a review which found 1957 USA women & modern Dutch women both had the lowest rates of morning sickness. The modern Dutch diet is not a paragon of virtue, nor was 1950s America.

I keep finding studies that suggest hot flushes are "highly prevalent" in all countries where they have been studied.
