Mirena and menopause

I am 52 years old and I was at the gynecologist today. He did a FSH blood test on me and said I was in menopause. The doctor wants me to have my mirena removed and go hormones. I told the nurse I could get pregnant still if I get the mirena removed. She said no I couldn't get pregnant because I am in menopause. My husband and I have 4 children ages 28, 24, 20 and 15. My husband had a vasectomy 15 years ago and it failed. I got pregnant 11 years ago for the 5th time and had a miscarriage. That is why I got the mirena and I just want to be sure I can't get pregnant ever again. It is time for us to be grandparents.

I think I would want some contraception in your situation.

This is useful and recently updated. It says to leave mirena in place for one year following a high FSH reading over the age of 50.

Mirena makes a good progestogen component of HRT if you have problems - you just need to add oestrogen patch or gel. It does need replacing every 5 years for this.

NICE says the FSH readings are not reliable.

If you have already had it out, it might be best to use condoms for a year, to make sure your periods do not come back.
