Period 8 days late - this has never happened before!

I always keep a track of my periods on an app and although they are very heavy they are always around every 28-30 days.
However, although I have pre-menstrual symptoms (sore boobs, bloated, few spots etc) there is no period, it’s now 8 days late.
I was 45 yesterday and have had peri menopausal symptoms for a while now. Are missed periods to be expected or would they be more erratic in their behaviour? I’m concerned as I’ve never been this late before!

Could you be pregnant?

EggysMom · 20/03/2018 15:05

I'm 49, I was randomly ten days late last summer, but my cycle has been regular again since. I kinda got my hopes up that the menopause was starting ....

YesILikeItToo · 20/03/2018 15:11

Where I’ve got to with this is that periods become less regular. I asked my doctor about it, he was utterly uninterested, said it was not a symptom of menopause, but he didn’t use the phrase peri-menopause at all. Google says that periods can become faster, slower, bit of both. Mine are certainly erratic, i’m Your age.

So many GPs are disinterested and, I think, uninformed. I'm 44 and asked my GP about peri-menopause, because my cycles are now typically 22 or 23 days so I'm bleeding for 1 week out of every 3. He just said 'You're too young for menopause', so I said 'Yes, I know, but surely this is a sign that oestrogen is diminishing and I'm now in peri-menopause', he just repeated himself again and said I'm too young. I feel that a lot of GPs simply don't know (or don't want to), about peri-menopause. I got the distinct feeling that he thought I should just go and away and get on with it and stop complaining Angry

So if you have worries I would go to a well woman clinic or a gynecologist - someone who actually knows (and gives two shits)!

Pregnant? I really hope not!! But will check next week if still nothing happens.
I have lots of random things going on:- anxiety is really very bad at the moment, sleepless nights, achy, grumpy, hot at night just before period, foggy headed, IBS really playing up etc.
Last week I asked my GP if I could be perimenopausal, he asked if my periods were regular, I said up to now yes, he then said no and that was that! I’ve had a blood test today as I’ve asked for my thyroid to be checked but apart from that GP doesn’t want to know, I’ll need to get a referral from him to see a gynaecologist and I’ve checked but can’t see there are any well women clinics in my area unfortunately!

I'm in a similar position. I missed one last summer and went to my GP who just said it's probably 'just my age' but to take a pregnancy test anyway and come back if it's positive. She was very dismissive, especially when I said I knew I wasn't pregnant and wasn't going to take a test.

I'm currently 15 days late and have all the symptoms you describe. Not sure whether to go back to the docs again.

lljkk · 21/03/2018 15:56

Boggles my mind that someone could have decades of completely predictable periods.

Potplant · 21/03/2018 18:01

Every 28/29 days like clockwork. I could confidently schedule holidays around them! When I was TTC I took the test when I was 3 days late because I just knew (and was right). I suppose that's way I freaked out a bit when I missed one last year.

They're very painful and Ive always had awful PMT, if it's any consolation Smile

lljkk · 21/03/2018 18:04

Oh.. I had bad pain & PMT, too Grin. But only for the first 20 yrs or so. Hardly any since I had kids. I've never been heavy, either.

Why would you bother going to the GP? It's completely normal to occasionally have a weird period?

I've not had a period for 8 months and it never once occurred to me to go the GP.

Potplant · 21/03/2018 20:29

Tralalee - it's extremely not normal for me And I feel like absolute crap. Why wouldn't I go to the GP if I don't feel well and I'm worried it could be something serious. The only hesitation I have is how dismissive the Gp was last time.
