Night sweats - is there anything to make it stop?

Just that really! I am nearly 48 and must be going throught the menopause. Not that many symptoms but the night sweats are awful. It’s every night and I wake up soaking. I just sleep in a cotton vest and cotton pants but have to change both every night as they are wet. It’s really getting to me as I actually wake up freezing too as I’m wet and shivering. Is there anything to take to make it stop, natural or from gp?
Thanks.

I have thought about acupuncture a lot Abra1de but have never got round to it. Nightsweats have never been a big issue for me as I find I sleep worse on nights when I don't have them, but I wonder if it would help digestive problems and fibroid pain. Thanks for the reminder to look into it.

I think it helps. Good luck!

I really feel for anyone going through these horrible traumatic night sweats. I did two things to stop mine. I started HRT immediately and I discovered pyjamas that are made of 100% polyester work to soak up all the sweat and keep you dry at night. This stops you waking up soaking wet and cold. I brought mine from jasper Conran at Debenhams. They must be 100% polyester, trust me I tried loads of different types of material and this is the only one that works. Now on HRT, I only get a couple of night sweats a month. I was getting them every single night! When I know the sweats are coming I wear my pyjamas and stay dry. I really hope that this helps.

Have just spent three days with hot flushes, night sweats, dizziness and feeling so damn tired. Have had the insomnia bit for about three years now, and using lidocaine patches for a nerve problem solved that, but it's started again.

I was having a period every 28 days, then it would go to 32, then 23, then back to 28 again. This is the second month that I have gone over 32 days. It was 37 last time, and looks like it might be that this month. I hate not knowing. I have to pack a load of san pro every time I travel; it was fun at Vienna airport last time when they wanted to swab my rucksack and handbag and paw through the contents!

Am 45. Have had the night sweats just as you describe for as long as I can remember apart from when living in a tropical country, which I find a bit odd. Anyway, they are worse at the moment and I had wondered if that was the change in season or maybe it is becoming worse because of menopause.

Which ever reason they are exhausting and the idea of sharing a bed with someone is awful. I am a cold natured person and tend to wear more layers than most.

My memory retention is possibly becoming effected too tbh, I feel a bit like the mad old woman in the corner at work and had a little cry in the kitchen today. Finding my self worth a bit wobbly in the work place because of it.

This thread has taught me alot, had no idea women on HRT still bled. Damn! Can I ask those taking it, is it the same kind of bleed as your period? I have had long and very painful periods since they began and the thought of them stopping has been a golden light on the horizon!

100% polyester pyjamas definitely works to keep you dry throughout the night which in turn gets you a better nights sleep.

Emerald13 · 09/04/2018 21:18

Hi Betty!
My periods on hrt are very very light, in fact they are ‘fake’ periods due to hrt. They are just a bleed that lasts a couple of days.
If you don’t like the idea of periods, you can try a continuous type of hrt so you can take daily estrogen with a progestin or progesterone with no periods at all.

ParisUSM · 10/04/2018 06:59

BB, you can only have continuous HRT if you're through menopause, and not had a period for a year, not sure from your post. A lot of women choose to have periods by using sequential rather than use continuous, to avoid having to always be on progesterone which is the one which causes a lot of people problems.

HRT definitely isn't a miracle drug, and not for everyone. There are downsides in having periods, whether light or not, for the rest of your life!

Like BeyondThePage said don’t be too quick to shrug symptoms off as menopause, especially if you have just had your mirena removed

Night sweats are a symptom of TB among other things

Have a chat with your gp, especially if you are getting one symptom so strongly and no other symptoms

BettyBaggins · 11/04/2018 21:37

@Emerald13 thank you.

You wise folk you, what issues can the progesterone cause? We have breast cancer in the family x3.

Watching this thread with interest. OP I have the same symptoms as you... I am a little more absent minded then usual, but its the hot flashes at night which are causing problems as I am struggling to get enough sleep. Someone at work is giving me some sage tablets... fingers crossed.
