Problematic Periods in 30’s

Hello all,

16 months ago after having 4 children I decided to have a uterus abalation as the last lot were twins my periods were lasting 10 days out of 25 day cycle with horrid gushing and flooding. I was told after 9 months clear of having my twins that my uterus hadn’t shrunk back like it should so this may be the problem. He recommended the procedure but if it didn’t work hysterectomy. He said that most people stop there period so all together after this.

Unfortunately I wasn’t one of those people but the first 6 months was like heaven such a lack of blood I was so happy.

Slowly but surely periods have crept back up to 8 days with at the very worst 21 day cycle (this cycle was 23 days). It isn’t gushing like before but still only having a 2 week gap is actually getting me quiet low.

Last month I had full blood, thyroid and hormone test as due to breast pain the consultant thought I could be peri-men.

I’m at a crossroads about that to do really, is this what I have to expect from now on?

I have quiet a few holidays coming up and it’s looking like I will have to go and the pill to delay my period on every single holiday!

Just to add the tests all came back normal so can’t be peri men

You could try tranexamic acid for the heavy days, and I know other women use the Mirena to deal with heavy periods too. Not sure how reliable one set of blood tests can be, as hormones differ so much. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will be along soon.

I have a Mirena coil, which was fitted to try and deal with my short cycles, which were driving me mad. When I had it fitted I was told that there are three possible outcomes with Mirena:

  1. It makes no difference to short cycles
  2. It makes them normal 28 days
  3. It stops periods altogether

I, unfortunately, fell into category 1 and it's made no difference whatsoever to the irritating 23 day cycles I've been having since my late 30s, but it has made my periods much lighter. So it might be worth trying for you.

Oh - and there is a possible number 4 to the list above, which no doctor will tell you about, which is:

  1. Mirena makes you feel awful and you will want to have it removed. I know of several people who have felt like this and/or have gained weight or had other negative responses to it.

Personally, aside from NOT curing the issue I had it put in for, Mirena makes me feel pretty good. It has massively improved PMT symptoms and general moodiness (I am 44 and starting to be peri-menopausal, so this is a good side-effect), I have gained no weight, and its nice not to have to worry about contraception for 5 years.
