Panic attacks and trouble sleeping

Please tell me I'm not going mad.
I'm awake it's 3 am and I haven't been to sleep yet. Had what feels like a fast heart beat and panicky. About 90 beats but really thumping out my chest. Every time I doze off I jump awake and it's scaring the crap out of me. I'm a week from being due on and in Peri stage.
Please help

Was that due to hormones?

Was that due to hormones?

Yes it was, but I have a 5cm sliding hiatus hernia, doing a bit of research I discovered that too causes palpitations, vagus nerve anyone? So I am suffering both ways.

I am one of the few I suspect who am loving this uber cold weather my bedroom is like a fridge, it is bliss when a hot flash occurs and I can just throw back the covers and my skin temperature drops back more quickly.

Abra1de · 28/02/2018 15:38

The panic attacks can be caused by falling oestrogen levels meaning you get a cortisol rush.

I don’t have them since starting accupuncture. They are horrid. I used to
be convinced I had forgotten to give my children lifesaving medication. They weren’t on any medication at all.

Mummytron · 28/02/2018 18:11

That's interesting because I've started acupuncture for my arthritis and she said she is helping with my hormones too so perhaps I'll mention it x

I’ll be interested to hear how you get on, Mummy!

I had the panic and racing heart in the night and during the day. Not related to what I was doing- could have been just reading mums net!!
Also hot flushes.
GP put me on 10mg Citalopram, a low dose SSRI. Has made a huge difference. Almost no panic attacks and hot flushes still a bit at night but overall a big improvement.

Mummytron · 28/02/2018 21:06

Abra1de so far so good. Really relaxing and pain levels better. No gone but better

I think the accupuncture relaxes me too.

Here we go again. Fell asleep for 30 minutes and woke up 4 times

Is there another doctor at your surgery you could see? Perhaps a female gp may be more able to help you. Only saying that because I was in and out of the surgery and a&e for a few months and it wasn’t until I saw a female gp that she related all my symptoms to the menopause.

Hopefully then as you are still young she may have more idea on how best to treat you.

I think that whether or not there is a female gp you need to make another appt and demand help. It is not helping you having these broken nights..

Mummytron · 05/03/2018 21:52

Thanks Kahlua
I've seen a male and a female now. Both say nothing to worry about. I think I will go back again. I'm terrified I'll have a heart attack which is daft

You need to go and ask another dr about HRT. Lulu posted about a week ago giving the same advice.

But BTW that heart jump thing is really common; I've had it since I was a child, DH has it, my mum has had it- it's nothing to do with meno, it's just your body relaxing as you doze off then something ( don't know what!) gives it a bit of a jolt.

Just go to the dr, say you have all the symptoms of peri meno, there is a history of early meno in your family and you'd like to try HRT.

Kahlua4me · 05/03/2018 22:05

It certainly does feel as though it is a heart attack. However, it has probably been going on for too long now to be a heart attack.

Not that I am in away qualified to diagnose but seems unlikely given the length of time it has been going on for. That was my theory anyway! Gp did refer me to cardiologist and as expected, nothing was found!

You do need to ask gp about HRT and see what their thoughts are. Really stress about ages of family members.

PollyPerky · 05/03/2018 22:35

OP a heart attack is a crushing pain like an elephant sitting on your chest. You'd feel sick, sweaty and find it hard to breathe. You might also have a pain down your left arm, or your back, or your jaw.

Palpitations are a well known symptom of peri. Have a look at this site.

Thanks both
I've told the gp all those things.told to take vitamins. I'll go back again.
The heart jump thing is new for me. Some nights I'll do it every time I doze.
I'm struggling
