So I have Osteopenia and I am peri-menopausal at 47. I was prescribed oestrogen only by my GP and to add insult to injury it is the mare's urine version. So I am going back next week armed with more knowledge than ever on this subject and I will be requesting either patches or gel and progesterone as I still have a uterus. I didn't use my prescription.

My question is do I need a higher or lower dose of oestrogen at my age with osteopenia?

The dose of gel as an example is 2 pumps which gives 1.5 mgs of estrogen.
I don't know how this equates to patches as there is not a direct correlation but I think it would be about a 50mcg patch. Have a look at Treatments on Menopause matters site and some types of HRT have a * next to them to show they are suitable for osteoporosis.

As you have osteopenia and not full osteoporosis, you should find a low-medium dose will help. However, as well as HRT you should do the correct exercises (resistance 3 x a week) to build bone, and get enough calcium and Vit D in your diet through food ideally.
