Heavy and prolonged bleeding.

Hi. I'm 52 and periods have been reasonably regular. I started light bleeding about 4 weeks ago and it went on and off each day up until a week ago when I have had a very heavy period with blood clots. Have been having clots for a while so not too concerned. No pain at all. The bleeding is not tailing off like normal though. Using extra large tampons and pads. I'm not feeling unwell really, just tired and low in mood. Very tearful and angry and it's worrying me now.

I'm making an appointment with GP for tomorrow. Has anyone else had something similar? I've got a bit of health anxiety so that doesn't help. Thanks very much.

dahliaa Your scan report sounds like everything is normal (to my untrained eye) but I'm not a Dr. Definitely you should see the GP and get answers / assurance from him/her.

dahliaaa · 12/02/2018 23:48

Thanks for reply Dunnowhy.
From reading around it looks like v heavy periods are quite common at this stage but if it doesn't stop in next few days I'll make an appointment to see dr.

DunnoWhy · 13/02/2018 00:23

If it was me, even if it the bleeding stops I would still go to the GP and ask for information.

It's good idea to know what causes it and therefore whether it is likely to happen again, in, lets say two months time.

If you don't go to the GP to clarify now, and if bleeding starts again later on, then you'll be in exactly where you are now ie not knowing and worrying. Knowledge is power Smile I would say, especially when it comes to your health.

Going to the GP will take only one hour of your time (seeing the GP will only take 5-10 minutes of that time Smile ) which is nothing in the big scheme of things, but having the knowledge about your body is priceless.

(I said I was a wimp)

Thanks Dunno

Just wondering how everyone is doing with the bleeding.

After v heavy bleeding for a full 3 weeks I saw GP. Have had a blood test to check for anaemia and also referred for scan. Will get results of blood tests in next few days - still waiting for scan date.

Bleeding started to slow down on day 26 but didn't stop completely and today (day 29) its q heavy again although I think this could be the start of next period (?)

DunnoWhy · 23/02/2018 10:09

Hi dahliaaa, it's good that you saw the doctor. You'll have the answers and assurances very soon I hope, as well as complete peace if mind. Best of luck.

As for me, i don't have any bleeding, but the fact that in two consecutive years I developed polyps which were taken out and analysed, makes me aware of something could easily be growing in there again (without necessarily any severe symptoms). So to put my mind at rest, I saw my GP as well, who arranged an ultrasound scan, i had it yesterday. Now i need to wait approx one week for scan results to be in GP's hands and we'll take it from there.

On the first polyp incident I had unusual and heavy bleeding. On the second polyp incident a year later, I didn't have any bleeding but had cramps similar to period cramps but my periods had stopped ny then so it was unusual. Now, i don't have any symptoms as such, just the knowledge that my body grew polyps twice before, which is a worry enough.

Sometimes I think that being a woman is a bad deal, the amount of things we deal with...

dahliaaa · 23/02/2018 12:12

Thanks Dunno the first blood tests are back and I'm anaemic as expected so I'll take the supplements. Still waiting for scan appointment but think that will take a while to come through.

Furry how are you doing ?

dahliaaa · 23/02/2018 12:13

Sorry Dunno meant to say hope your scan all goes ok.

DunnoWhy · 23/02/2018 18:25

Thank you dahliaaa. Hope your scan appointment comes quick and your doctor puts your mind at rest..

dahliaaa · 08/03/2018 23:21

I'm just bumping this to see how everyone is doing.

I'm still waiting for my scan - and still bleeding on and off (more on than off.) 6 weeks now. I'm taking spatone.

TwentySmackeroos · 08/03/2018 23:33

Hi dahlias, I’m a bit younger than you (45) and not in peri menopause according to blood tests. I had an horrific period with flooding for six weeks. tranexamic acid was prescribed. I got a Mirena under GA and a d&c. Four children, all vaginal births, no fibroids, no history of endometriosis- but wham at 45, and it turns out my mum and sister experienced the same at that age. I have had very light periods since, and the coil should see me through five years.

I am getting iron levels retested next week (six months on from the above) as I still feel permanently exhausted. The tranexamic did work but I needed a high dose for two weeks for it to kick in.

I honestly thought I was going to haemorrhage when the gp gave me an internal just to see how bad things were - it was like a bloodbath and I was referred very quickly to a gynae. I live like a hermit for the six weeks and had to change clothes at work. I spent August in black trousers. You have my sympathies.

dahliaaa · 09/03/2018 00:09

Thanks replying twenty - sounds horrendous. Glad your you got everything sorted. I keep thinking the bleeding is going to start tailing off and then it gets heavy again. I'm grateful that at the moment there's no pain with it. (I had very heavy, very painful periods when I was younger.)

trickydickie · 09/03/2018 00:12

Twenty - that sounds awful and exhausting. That's good the bleeding has stopped.

I have only had 3 weeks of not bleeding since 9/12/17. Most days it is really heavy and clots. I have to wear tena lady as even night time pads are not thick enough.

Took me about 6 weeks to eventally see a gp, which was yesterday. I have to get bloods taken on Monday and she has referred me for an ultrasound.

She has given me northestone. (spelling) which will hopefully stop the bleeding. Also a vaginal moisturiser. I had told her I suspected vaginal atrophy as I penetrative sex is very painful and other symptoms point to this. She tried to give me an internal but I was in so much pain she had to stop. Also, my smear is very well over due and I don't know how I am going to manage getting a smear. I was hoping she would give me vagifem but she never. I was crying and so embarrassed in the doctors after the internal.

I know to get this investigated further I will need further internals etc.and just don't know how I will cope.

dahliaaa · 09/03/2018 09:22

Hi tricky yours sounds very similar to mine - how old are you ?
Hope your scan comes through quickly.
If your blood tests show anaemia I've found spatone liquid iron very good if you don't like the iron tablets.

trickydickie · 09/03/2018 14:08

Dahliaa - has your scan appointment still not come through? I am the same age as you, 47. Is the spatone helping? Are you feeling less tired?

Hoping mine comes through quickly. I am going to start the norethisterone after my blood tests on Monday. Hopefully by this time next week I will no longer be bleeding.

dahliaaa · 09/03/2018 16:39

No I haven't got the appointment yet.

Spatone definitely helps me. I've had anaemia on and off for the last few years. I hate the tablets so started spatone instead. GP was very sceptical that it would make much difference but blood results showed it was working for me (not sure if that's the case for everyone.)

I've just put a question in general health about the Norethisterone. I didn't take it 3 weeks ago when the GP gave it to me for flooding because the bleeding lessened but it's got heavier again now so wondering if I should start it now while I wait for the scan.
