I've linked to this loads of times but it does end up at the bottom of the page, so here we are again. These guidelines came out in Nov 2015 and are the guidelines for GPs (and women) on the treatment of menopause. They turned around some of the previous ideas, especially on HRT duration, incorrect use of anti depressants instead of HRT , and unnecessary blood tests (for women over 45) to diagnose menopause. They also state clearly how women with POF need early treatment with HRT.

Sadly, many GPs are up to date with this but if you read, print and show a GP who isn't up to speed, it might help!

The British Menopause Society is also working all the time to train GPs but it's going to take time.
Their website has fact sheets and they often write press releases so worth keeping an eye out for their news too.

Thank you Polly!

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 27/01/2018 13:11

Thanks Polly. Just mentioned in a new thread, if you can advise please?

NickyNora · 27/01/2018 13:13

Too many GPs don't follow the guidelines, in my experience.

What can patient's do if their GP blatantly ignore the guidines?

PollyPerky · 27/01/2018 13:50

Nicky Find another GP? Or, ask them very directly in a polite yet assertive tone' Can you tell me please why you are not working within the NICE guidelines?'

PollyPerky · 28/01/2018 08:26

I've asked Sponge and MN said yes, so waiting for it to happen.

Because Pinned Post Polly is a bit of a tongue twister, if one has partaken of the wine...Grin

I have recently started to get pain in both elbows. I think it could be new menopausal symptoms. Any advice?

I use estriol cream for VA. I have very minor flushes.

Shampaincharly · 26/02/2018 13:36

Sorry , meant to start a new thread.

Thank you!
Just made a complaint to my GP surgery after the doctor I spoke to told me that "HRT any really helps with hot flushes and since I'm coping with those I don't need it"
Then sent me for blood tests which "didn't come back"
Then when I pushed for a second appointment the young male receptionist suddenly found my blood test results and infirmary me that they were "normal" no figures given and that I was not menopausal.
Didn't offer another appointment or any other advice or information.
I'm so cross and frankly fed up of putting up with their crap.
Does anybody have an helpful links or advice as I'm determined to push this.
(I've already quoted several NICE guidelines that they didn't acknowledge)

May be of interest to posters here - large scale investigation of all cause mortality for women on long term HRT. Spoiler alert - very reassuring.

Thankyou!

Thank you.
About to 'do battle' again.

I'm 48, when I contacted GP last Jan about possible perimenopause, he dismissed me and prescribed ADs.

I moved GPs in the pandemic but cannot get an appointment, nor do they do e-consults.
Considering private, but can't really afford it.

My GP has always been dismissive of me when I mention peri menopause. I decided to have a video call with a specialist private clinic and was prescribed HRT Gel and Pessaries. I have the Mirena fitted but the doctor informed me that as it's 4 years old I need to get it removed and a new Mirena fitted. The progesterone would not be enough after 4 years.

This is where my problem is as my GP said they don't fit the Mirena. I managed to get a consult with another GP that lives near me but they told me it will last another year and the first doctor is wrong. I think the second GP is wrong and I need a new Mirena. She was also really obnoxious and said she was an expert on menopause.

Do you think I need a new Mirena fitted?
