Am I wasting the drs time?

I'm nearby 53 and have had a mirena coil for nearly 10 years (not the same one). Up till the end of November I can honestly say that I had no menopause symptoms. My dr would say that the Mirena coil would see me through my menopause but I had no idea what she meant if I'm honest.

I then had a nasty kidney infection which gave me a very high temperature, it was then like flicking a switch and after I recovered i couldn't regulate my temperature. I have always felt the cold but it was like I had lava in my veins... I was having hot sweats at least 5 times a day and would sweat at night so much that the sheets were damp. I was also continually hot to the point I couldn't wear my normal winter work clothes as I was sweating and I had large wet patches under my arms. I also became really arsey with life. This all lasted for just over a month.

One friend gave me a pack of calms tablets of which i take 2 in the morning and occasionally another 2 before bed and another friend recommended Menopace plus tablets, I brought them and have taken them religiously every day.

Now the thing is... I fell.like my old self again... the hot sweats and arseyness stopped after a couple of weeks and my core temperature is back to normal, in fact I have my electric blanket on as we speak :)

Now my problem is that I made an appointment with the doctor back after Christmas and I'm due to go tomorrow afternoon, I feel like a real fraud for going and wasting her time when I feel fine now.
Can anyone tell me if the effects of the tablets are temporary and should I still go, is there anything they can do for me?

Thank you for reading I'm looking forward to your replys

When your dr said the coil would see you through to menopause, she meant either as a contraceptive or as something to stop heavy periods (whichever you were using it for.)

The Mirena contains a synthetic type of progesterone which I expect you know! This won't do 'anything' for meno symptoms and in fact could make them worse.

During peri, your symptoms come and go. So although you feel okay at the moment and the sweats have gone, they may come back any day. The alternative stuff you have been taking may have had some effect but on the other hand it could be coincidence- your own estrogen levels could be rising for a bit and that's why the sweats have gone for the moment.

FWIW I had no meno symptoms at all until nearly 53 apart from some bad moods- but I blame that on my then teenage kids! :)

If I were you, I'd not see the dr but wait and see how you go as the weeks go by.

If you do decide to see your dr you need to think about why you're going along- all they can offer is HRT as a treatment, if that's what you want.

Hi PollyPerky
I saw your reply just as I was sat in the Dr's surgery :) She has suggested that I have a blood test to see my fsh ? levels and a full blood count to check my thyroid and iron levels as I have no energy lately.
We did discuss that the tablets I'm taking may be short term relief and I think I would definitely consider hrt if the effect of them does wear off any time soon. I just couldn't cope with the flushes/sweats and mood swings not sure my partner could either :)
She also printed off some information for me to read about HRT.
She will contact me if my bloods come up with anything... and I'll get back in touch if and when I need to. I'm glad I went to have the chat.
Thanks for responding PollyPerky x
