Lots of questions - peri, period and contraception!

I'm 53. Had coil removed 6/7 months ago and periods have started normally again (ie like I used to have before I had the mirena). This month I'm on my ninth day of my period - is having longer periods part of peri/normal?

I feel so ignorant about this time of my life - what's normal, what I should be expecting, etc.

Also due to a new relationship I need to consider contraception again - what would you recommend? The pill?

I'm 52 and had my mirena coil fitted 10 years ago as my periods were very heavy and long, I'm on my second one.
Can I ask how you got on with the Mirena coil any why you had it removed. Is there a possibility you can have another one?

Yes longer periods can be part of peri but not for everyone. Mine were shorter.

Contraception- some drs would feel you are too old for the combined pill but it depends. The rule is it's okay up to around 50 or the menopause.

Why did you have your Mirena removed? That's contraception.

fedupandnogin · 29/08/2017 08:43

I had it removed because I never really liked having it in (for various reasons), thought I'd gone through the menopause (I was wrong!) and didn't really need it IYKWIM ;-)

I'm 51 and this my final more natural will be out in 2 years at which time I was told a blood test would check hormone levels really fertility /menopause.
But in a new relationship, safe sex means condoms.

Re fertility etc

My GP told me they keep implant/Mirena in till 55 because of it reducing periods, mine does that plus it helps my migraines so I'll have a new one next year (will be over 50).
