Help! On holiday and no access to evening primrose oil supplements

Goddammit! I am on holiday in an area with no main town and I've forgotten to bring my high strength EPO capsules. After three days cold turkey I now know exactly how much I rely on them Shock

The food is very good and with loads of choice so I'm wondering if there is any point me even trying to target certain things to eat or drink. Does anyone have any advice? I feel absolutely dreadful - tired, shaky, grumpy, dizzy and like I want to murder my husband and children. What can I do?

I should have said - I'm not in the uk now; on a fairly quiet island!

If you're in Spain (Baleares or Canaries) you should be able to get it in a pharmacy or even larger supermarket. It's called La Onagra. It's sold widely here. Your hotel should be able to direct you to a pharmacy. For the typical capsules you won't need a prescription. (The Spanish word for prescription is 'receta').

There are some suggestions on this website of foods to alleviate menopausal symptoms. I realise you didn't mention menopause in your OP, I have just jumped to that conclusion from the symptoms you described. I don't wish to cause any offence.

Hope you feel better soon.

Oh thank you - no not in Spain; it's the Caribbean but Spanish speaking, so that is really helpful!

The logical part of me thinks that women here probably do have the same issues and use this stuff, but the peri menopausal part of me is now descending into brain fog and has gone all flappy!

It's probably worth me trying to get a cab to whatever the nearest equivalent to a pharmacy is, then and throwing myself on their mercy

Are you sure this is not psychological? EPO takes many weeks-months to build up in the system to an effective level and it's only proven to work for cyclical PMS breast pain- nothing else. (RCOG did a survey)
It doesn' t work on the basis of taking a few = relief and not taking a few=symptoms.

If you are desperate you could try borage / starflower oil but in all honesty I don't think not taking EPO for a few days gives withdrawal symptoms.

Well - I would actually be really happy to hear it's just a placebo (and have been furiously googling on that!)

This is the second time I've done this though; the first time I was staying with friends, went out to buy some and felt better within a day of taking them. If it's a placebo then it works for me; that said, I'm usually quite good at mind over matter so I will try!

www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-1006-evening%20primrose%20oil.aspx?activeingredientid=1006

All essential long chain fatty acids (incl fish oils) take at least 3 months at a high dose to make changes.

Missing them for a few days will not make any difference because the cellular turn over takes weeks.

Are you staying in a hotel? Most hotels provide a list of pharmacies in their "welcome" pack in the room. If not, you could ask at reception or Google then ask the hotel receptionist to call and see whether they have what you want (and whether they're open) before you set off in a taxi. Good luck!
