Did you start menopause the same age as your mum?

Hi

I am really worried about going through early menopause like my mum and gran did (38). I was wondering if you went through menopause the same age as your mum as I have read it can be genetically linked.

Yes it is, but having said that I have 2 friends whose mums had early meno late 30s- and they didn't. So on average yes, but not every single time.

Me, my mum and my gran were all 50-ish. I think my gran was 50 (according to my mum), my mum was about 51 /52 and I was 52/53.

If worried ask for blood tests at GP.

I second that - go get blood tests. They'll measure FSH and LH (I think that's what they're called!) which are indicators.

Do you have DC, or are you worried it might be too late . . . ?

I have one DC and have been trying for almost 2 years for a second.
I have had blood tests and they say no but little things are worrying me like getting more facial hair and my cycle getting shorter and shorter some months it's only 20 days.

If it's a fertility issue, see a fertility specialist sooner rather than later. They can do blood tests but also more specialist tests like ovarian reserve- telling you how many eggs you have left.

I am seeing a fertility specialist but that wasn't really my question. My question is did you go through menopause at the same time as your mother? I can read it online but I wondered what was happening to real people and how often it actually is the same.

Sounds as if you might have PCOS. Been tested for that? Facial hair is a classic sign as well as irregular periods.

Well, the info online is based on Real People! That's how they arrive at the stats.

They don't just make them up.

I'm 37 and perimenopause started years ago for me, I'm now on HRT. My mum went through menopause at 45, which I guess is relatively early.

A little bit earlier. My mum was 53 at first signs, last period at 55. I'm 50 and have had only two periods since last September (though no other symptoms, but I'm assuming menopause), so I'm about 3 years earlier than her. But not wildly different, I guess.

I have no idea what age my mother started her periods or went through the menopause, there's no way she would discuss something like that with me. Wouldn't discuss her pregnancies or labours either, even when I was pregnant myself. Sad I honestly have no idea what to expect.

My mum was 42, my nan was 31. I have just had the blood tests at 38 as I have lots of perimenopausal symptoms and my GP is fairly convinced it is starting for me. It's bloody miserable. I am sat here sweating like a pig, after having had a one day period, and feeling very sorry for myself.

My mum 46, mine 42. I think that has to do no only with genetics but with low fat, stress and dietary.

No. Mom was 33/34 (straight after having me apparently). I'm 49 now and still have an occasional period, currently having one of the worst and longest bouts of pms too 😈.

My mum had a hysterectomy at 38 for prolonged heavy bleeding and large fibroids~ she’s now 72. So I’ll never know.

I too have just had a hysterectomy at 48 for the exact same thing. My maternal grandmother also had a hysterectomy but we never knew what for....it was just “all taken away”

My mum was mid fifties but my Nan was 39. I’m 39 now and have a lot of peri symptoms so thinking am taking after Nan rather than mum! Mum started periods at 11, while I was 13 and a nurse told me once that early starters are later finishers.

My mum, gran & sister were all done by 45/46.

I am currently 45.5 & still having periods, but they are very close together - sometimes 14-18 days.

I started my periods at 10, so will be interesting to see if the early start means early finish.

No.

Mum had early menopause at 40 which caused osteoporosis and she needed HRT for about 10 years.

At 45 I have some pre menopausal symptoms like a slightly shorter cycle, but my periods are still regular and fertility tests 2 years ago showed my hormones are still normal.

You should see a GP and get some blood tests. If you need help conceiving then earlier treatment is better, if you are having early menopause then earlier treatment is better.

Thanks everyone. I had my amh tested which was 22 which is apparently normal for my age so my hormones are fine. Just shortening cycles because of age I guess. Infertility still a mystery 2 years on though :(
