Products that work?

Hello, I find myself quite confused by the range of products available to help with menopause symptoms. i've gone into it a bit early at about 43, don't want to do HRT but of course the symptoms are raging. I would love to hear about supplements anyone here might have tried that have helped especially with vaginal dryness and the feeling of bloatedness. Also, hot flushes and mood swings. Many thanks

Because she knows what she is talking about and has genuinely helped people.

Mumof100 · 31/03/2018 18:53

The only people who are qualified are medical professionals. The rest is antidotal or internet based.

Think magnesium has been mentioned on this thread before - I stopped taking it about 10 days ago and have been reminded why I took it in the first place. I've had eye twitches and a low level coathanger headache. Started taking magnesium again 3 days ago and already things are quieting down.

Definitely worth looking at for anyone with hormonal headaches. Think it's good for muscle pain too.

My GP (female, early 30s) said the menopause was not her expertise and referred me to her more experienced colleague, who was a bit more informed but seemed mildly bored by the subject /issue /stage of life . Appalling!

Emerald13 · 31/03/2018 20:24

If we don’t get informed and take care of yourselves, no one will do for us.
Ophelia I felt the same way with my first gyn and I spent a lot of my time, money and energy to find an informed one.
I feel that they don’t earn a lot of money from menopause treatments so they are bored with that.
If I had asked for getting pregnant I’m sure that I’d have their full interest and they would have find the way! 😄

Very interested in the magnesium. What dose?

ParisUSM · 31/03/2018 21:42

Taking 200mg magnesium glycinate at the moment but when it runs out I'll probably go back to holland and Barrett magnesium and zinc and I think it has a little more.

Mumof100 · 31/03/2018 21:56

Thank you. I really appreciate that.

"antidotal" - ???? Anecdotal evidence is circumstantial evidence ie related by someone from their own experience. Evidence from science and research, and current recommendations about medical treatments - especially if peer reviewed or from reputable sources like NHS and the recognised menopause and medical societies - is just that - evidence based and is NOT anecdotal. The reporting of this can come direct from medical professionals, or from knowledgeable and well read individuals, whether qualified medically, scientifically or not. This is not anecdotal.

The mganesium link was fine (more or less) until at the end - guess what - the company promotes its own products and supplements.

It is much better - as she says at the start - to get most of your vitamins and minerlas from a healthy and varied, balanced diet composed of fresh ingredients cooked from scratch with minimal processing. Judicious use of some selected supplements may help in women ( people) who are in at risk groups or have a malabsorption problem.

ParisUSM · 01/04/2018 09:55

Bit rude over a typo.

Mumof100, should've said to maybe start on a low dose as magnesium can have a laxative effect.

My eye is no longer twitching and my headache's gone so for me I can be pretty sure I need magnesium at this present time of my life with hormones all over the place. There's so much out there that hasn't been peer reviewed and hasn't been financed by Big Pharma, I think at the end of the day we're grown women who are more than capable of listening to our own bodies.

Mumof100 · 01/04/2018 11:35

Ha ha & there was I thinking I was an educated woman who could spell. My whole life has fallen apart now. I am shamed....stones anybody. Thank you for the advice (c or s) I’m going to Holland & Barrett tomorrow. I have high hopes it will work.

Mumof100 · 01/04/2018 11:48

My comments where antidotal (oooops) as people’s experiences or internet based where people post links meaning advice on here is as stated by Mumsnet not professional advice from consultants. Spell checker is too blame not my high intelligence

Belonger · 03/04/2018 15:27

I've been seeing a medical herbalist, she listened very carefully to my experiences (particularlyots of pain in arms and legs, keeping me awake, clotting etc) and she makes me a prescription, I call it my magic Potion! I was very sceptical but it has been brilliant, absolutely changed my quality of life.

Mary34 · 20/04/2018 10:10

Do you know what’s in it?! I agree who cares if it works!!

I found this interesting particularly the quote about your Gp saying HRT is the only option available.

LovesMaltesers · 20/04/2018 13:04

re. the linked to feature, It's body-identical, not bio identical. It's all available from the NHS. Bio identical is not licensed or approved in the UK. 99% of HRT is body-identical.

Mary34 · 20/04/2018 14:33

I got the impression if you read the article through that she is referring h to bioidentical hormones/plant based/sometimes referred to natural hormones.

LovesMaltesers · 20/04/2018 15:53

Maybe. But that's what 95% of HRT is anyway. She makes it all sound like snake oil, not something any GP can give you. The only HRT that isn't body identical is prempak and premarin and some of the progestogens.

LovesMaltesers · 20/04/2018 17:08

The DM link is an advert for a book. The dr says ‘If your doctor says ‘All I have is conventional HRT’, it’s simply not true,’ says Erika.

Conventional HRT is natural. All you have to tell your dr is you don't want the horse urine sort.

menomon · 21/03/2019 23:23

Well that's a shame, all of the good meno information on this site is from polly perky, I could have really done with her advice
