51 AND STILL SHEDDING EGGS LIKE A BATTERY HEN, WHEN WILL IT STOP?!

I keep thinking (hoping) that I will miss a period and that will be the beginning of the end of it. I have had hot flushes for around 2 years, sometimes a period is late - maybe up to a week late but then I will have a normal period and another one when it was due as if the other one had not been late (iyswim). Should I not be done by now! Plus I have gained a few pounds, despite not eating a grain more and still exercising at the same level and it will not shift. Is this normal? It is very frustrating.

My thinking is you should persevere with conti HRT. The long bleed you had was unusual - basing this on friends experiences and forum posts!
It may be that you are not yet post meno so conti HRT is not suitable for you yet. You need 12 months with no periods for that.

Not sure how old you are or where you were in peri?

I've never used conti HRT and don't plan to. I don't want to use progesterones daily for reasons of risk- breast cancer. I'm still having bleeds in my 60s but the benefits of HRT outweigh those for me. There is no ideal solution but if you can tolerate a bleed for another year or so then maybe try conti again.

Doc tonight put me on Elleste Duet, the sequential one. Let's see what that does. I'm 53.

StirredNotShaken · 01/02/2017 21:15

dementedma what does that do?

I think it means I will have a bleed but it will be regulated and hopefully, more manageable. This one is now into its third week and I am sick to death of the brown sludge I am producing. Sorry, TMI

StirredNotShaken · 02/02/2017 14:26

demented - I feel your pain!

56 and a missed period before Christmas got my hopes up,then I had a floody period, one week off and another, stopped flooding but have been bleeding since steadily. As for flushes,I feel permanently damp at work.At home I have the heating down and wear easy to discard layers so manageable, except for nights. My bedroom is like an icebox, window open and I still wake up regularly, kick off the duvet etc.
GP suggested the marina coil but I am not so keen,I suppose it would help with the bleeding but the rest? Also I don't want to put onanymore weight,I'm overweight now but stable as loosing it it is a nightmare.

I have found my people!!!

51 and not a single sodding symptom. My friends and contempories are all on HRT or through the whole thing entirely and I'm still regular as clockwork.

StirredNotShaken · 16/02/2017 11:26

Welcome slug. Lovely to be among fellow ranters and overheated ragers 😆

seventh What you need is the Mirena to control the bleeding then a separate oestrogen ( pill, patch or gel) to get rid of those flushes etc. Don't put up with them! HRT is safe and works. You might even lose weight more easily if you aren't tired through disturbed sleep and feel more energised to exercise and eat fewer carbs etc. Worth a go.

Thanks Polly, will book an appointment, can't stand this perpetual damp feeling, even my scalp seems to pour!

StirredNotShaken · 16/02/2017 23:08

I'm 57 in June, this palava should be done by now!

fenneltea · 28/02/2017 19:08

I'm 51, had a fibroid removed for really heavy bleeding, missed last months period and lo and behold the bloody things turned up this month and just starting to get to the flooding stage again! I'm hoping it all ends soon.

I'm trying to get hrt, but my bp has been a bit high and the nurse practitioner is very cautious.

PollyPerky · 28/02/2017 19:35

Not sure a nurse is the best person to decide on this.

There is always a very small risk of stroke with high BP but too rare to be an issue in someone aged 51 unless it's sky high. HRT that is in the form of patches or gel does not increase the risk of blood clots although some HRT with conjugated equine estrogens (Prempak and Premarin) may raise BP a little. (This is what my consultant says, btw.)

Flushes - this might be a bit random but I was told by a local old lady witch to make an infusion of sage and basically drink a cup of tea a few times a day when I was having flushes. So, I grew sage in a pot on my kitchen windowsill and now if I get flushes, I grab a few leaves and make tea with a spoonful of honey. And it works, for me. They are definitely far less frequent now. And I don't care if it is a wotsit thingummy all in my head. It's free and it works and I have a lovely plant to look at.

PollyPerky · 28/02/2017 19:48

Sage is a well known treatment for flushes. You can buy sage tincture to dilute in water. I did try it myself (fresh leaves) for a while but it didn't work so I moved onto the hard stuff :)

I am with you Slug.. I am 51 with no symptoms except I seem to be more absent minded.

CustardShoes · 11/03/2017 16:31

I had very few/no symptoms right up to by 54th birthday. Then I had a period just after that, and then nothing. I was changing jobs at the time, and generally a bit frazzled, and got into bothers & panics in my head - apparently I managed to hide this completely from my new colleagues, who thought I was fine. I felt overwhelmed by joining them as they were one of the top teams in my profession in the country.

I look back now (4 years later) and wonder whether that feeling of being overwhelmed & panicky was actually the hormones flatlining. Nobody else noticed though, and apart from increasingly crap sleep (I think I snore badly, so it's that as well) I had very very few symptoms. Occasionally I felt like I was blushing furiously, but it was just across my face - no whole body hot flush.

But periods til 54 - although I didn't start till I was 16 (too skinny then I think). And the last couple of years of menstruating, I had very short but very heavy periods. A day of literally flooding, and then a "normal" day. Then nothing.

I always thought I would feel very very sad at menopause, but actually, my goodness the relief!
