I am 54. Periods just stopped 4 years ago. Usual symptoms. Just about coping, but about a month ago I started with a severe burning sensation. Have read up on virginal dryness, which does mention burning. Bought some virginal moisturiser which worked initially. Really affecting my sleep. Has anyone else got this?

Virginal sounds interesting!

Moisturisers don't work for vaginal atrophy. It has to be treated with vaginal oestrogen cream. Do not leave it- it will get worse. You need to see your GP. Many women have it- it's nothing to be embarrassed about.

Link here to some info- more on the same site.

Yes don't leave it, I had to do battle with my GP for 6 months to get approximate treatment when I started with VA.
Do not get fobbed off, you need a prescription for Vagifem or Ovestin.

And don't let them fob you off with 'you can only have this for 3 months' nonsense. NICE says it can be used as long as needed- until your are 100 if necessary.

Or you need a mirena coil if you are using Vagifem long termConfused as told to me by NHS gynaecologist with an interest in menopause problems!
I never went back to him and saw someone else who is up to date on NICE guidelines.

Thanks. Went to doctors. Gave me some Vagifem. Fingers crossed it works.

Use every night for two weeks first and then go to the maintenance dose that suits you. The twice a week was never enough for me, but it is quite safe to use more than that if needed. It will work, you should notice a difference quite soon but can take a few weeks to get full benefit.

Thanks. Noticed a difference already, especially on a night. Managed to sleep without been woken up with the burning sensation.

That's good, that burning at night is awful.
Keep the treatment going, it is not cureable and requires lifetime management.
