Choices after DEPO injection

Been to see the doctor as am suffering peri-menopausal symptoms (I am 49). I have been having the DEPO injection (so no periods) for 16 years and the doctor says that she can't believe I have been allowed it for this long.

She has now said that at 49 I still need to be thinking of different contraception as she will not authorize the DEPO any longer. The options she said are the coil, pill and I am sure she also mentioned the implant (I was very stressed over something else by the time I went int to see her). The big advantage of the DEPO has been no periods the whole time and also not having to remember to take something.

I would love to hear how others have got on. At this early stages my thoughts/reservations are:

Implant - don't like the idea of things in my arm

Pill - Pre DC found it difficult to remember (hence having 2 DC instead of 1!!). Is there one where periods will still stop?

Coil - read of heavy periods (any periods will not be good never mind heavy ones) and pain

TIA

mirena often stops periods and can be used to control heavy bleeding so could be worth a try. I dont have periods with mine

I've had depo on a off for 14 years now and last time the nurse said she didn't think I could have it much longer. I've been on it 3 years now without a gap and apparently it can cause osteoporosis but it works for me like no other contraception ever has! If they stop me from having it I've told the nurse I will want a sterilisation.

Bonkerz - I have had no break at all for 16 years. My mum has osteoporosis but the convenience of no periods has made me ignore possible side effects. I have wondered about being sterilized but I am worried that because of my age and the possibility that I may be peri-menopausal that I won't be allowed to

ilove - The thought of having the coil inserted is making me feel a bit queasy!!! No periods may convince me!

I am waiting for the blood test results back to see if I am peri-menopausal. I have to see (rather than just call for the results) the doctor to go through them so will discuss the option more at the appointment

I had the Depo-Provera implant and it turned me into a jealous raging monster for the first 4-6 weeks after having the implant. I am not usually like this at all. Obviously this is subjective as this only happened to me and I didn't know anyone else on it. Hormones do funny things sometimes.
