Can I have HRT after having had a DVT/pulmonary embolism? Or us it game over?

I am early 50s.

Last summer I had a very unexpected DVT and pulmonary embolism, was briefly hospitalised, and took warfarin for six months and thankfully made a full recovery.

My GP says absolutely 'No' to HRT.

So is this it? My family, my job, my finances, my sense of self are all being affected... and I need some bloody help. I always thought I would be able to have HRT if I needed it.

Bugger.

Have just checked in a book written by a gynae on menopause.
It's not an absolute no-no.

His view is that women like you should have blood tests for antithrombin 111 deficiency or acquired antiphospholipid syndrome. If the tests are negative then you are still at risks from clots compared to other women ( says 5% chance you will have another clot anyway) and if you do choose to use HRT it has to be transdermal and not pill form.

So never say never?

Thanks for looking that up for me, pinkfrocks. I'll be inquiring about those tests. I think I will offer to pay for them if necessary - though they ought to be available via my GP (I'm in England)?

Yes they ought to be available because of your medical history.
