I had a Hysterscopy today as an outpatient

Just to say if your having one off these and suffer with low pain threshold then I would advise you have it done under general!

Within about 15 mins I had the most terrible cramping pains, so much so I very nearly fainted! And couldn't move from the car park for 30 mins as the pain was so bad.

I don't want to scare anybody, JUST if you have LOW pain threshold to ask for general as not pleasant.

Mini- sorry you had so much pain.

Can I just add my experience?
I had this done with no GA and no local and had a reaction afterwards. I was still at the hospital so they took good care of me until I felt able to go home.

The reaction you had is a reflex action to something being put through the cervix- and it wouldn't have made any difference if you'd had a general- except you'd have been kept in hospital to allow the GA to wear off.

The hospital where you had it done were a bit negligent because they must have allowed you to go home too soon. Did they not keep you there for a while and give you a cuppa etc and ask how you felt?

Hope you feel better soon.

Hi Pink

They kept asking was I ok while it was being done, and told me to tell them when it got too uncomfortable!!!
The really bad pains didn't come on until say 5 mins after I got dressed.
The did ask did I want a coffee, but I just wanted to go home DP was outside waiting. It was then walking back to the car the cramping started that bad!!!

So when I go back again!! Even under GA I will get the cramps as bad????
God I don't ever want to have them pains again!!

I'm due to have one of these - little bit scared now! I am having GA, any other advice? Is this one of those where they pump you with gas and you get shoulder pains too?

pinkfrocks · 12/09/2014 20:16

No gas- that's a laparoscopy when they go in through an incision in your belly button.

It's a tiny camera - about 3mm across- they insert through the cervix. You might get slight period type pains and a tiny bit of discharge for a day.
Put your feet up for a few hours after but you'll be fine.

pinkfrocks · 12/09/2014 20:19

Mini- that was a bit naughty of them. My gynae insisted I hung around afterwards in case there was a reaction, which is evidently not uncommon.
I don't think you will need it done again anyway- and if you have a GA then you'd be waking up for a while anyway- so you might not be aware of the pains or even have them.

Just looked at consent form I had Hysterscopy and endometrial biopsy

I'm defo having another it hurt to much for her to get polyps out!!
she told me I will get get appointment to she nurse to go through what will happen then 2 weeks later procedure will be done.

I'm really not good with period pain, I used to faint when they were bad!! And these were lot more and also had pains down front of legs.

Don't want to scare anybody!!! I've no pain threshold ladies!
Going to defo tell the nurse when I go for pre op about how I was.

If you are having polyps removed then you are likely to have a GA. If not, then they ought to monitor you afterwards.
I felt no pain during the procedure but was quite poorly afterwards for a couple of hours.

I have a fairly low pain threshold, and have had 2 hysteroscopies in the last 12 months, with a biopsy taken each time. The hospital didn't suggest any pain relief and certainly didn't mention a GA. The consultant did say to let him know if I was in pain, but it was really straightforward, In fact, it hurt much less than a smear test.

As soon as it was over I was straight back in the car to get back to work.

Several if my friends have had hysteroscopies, none of them have had a bad experience. I wasn't even aware that some clinics do it under GA until I read that on MN.

I'm not trying to belittle your experience, OP, which clearly was very unpleasant, but I think it's a bit scaremongering to say that if you have a low pain threshold, you'll have a dreadful time.

pinkfrocks · 14/09/2014 22:38

I think there is a need to separate out 2 things here- the pain at the time of the procedure and a response that happens afterwards.

A vasovagel response is what happens to some women and is a reflex action to having something inserted through the cervix. It's not related to the amount of pain during the procedure.

There is plenty of info on the web about vasovagel responses, which can also occur during severe period pain- it's like a faint ( though not necessarily losing consciousness), the person feels really weak, sweats and maybe feels sick, and blood pressure and pulse rate falls. It's not controllable or something you can 'fight' by thinking yourself out of it.

I agree that many women feel fine having the procedure done - no pain- and there is no knowing how you might react to it.

I'm sorry if any ladies I have scared through my experience!!!
This was NOT my intention at all, the reason I mentioned my low pain threshold was because thats what I thought was the cause of me fainting!
But have since through reading info discovered it's something that happens to some people beyond your control!

The hospital recommended I have it done under GA to remove polyps they found during the Hysterscopy.
