I've been premenopausal for a couple of years now; I was 46 this week! My periods were anything between 16 to 22 days in the cycle. Once, I did go to 10 days late, but then came on. I flood, & can bleed for 2 - 3 weeks in 1 cycle.
I've been diagnosed with fibroids, (4 years ago), but as they were not sinister I didn't have the offered endometrial ablation because I had a bad accident ending up disabled still needing more surgery & was diagnosed with breast cancer which I had a mastectomy for but no chemo.
So, my last period lasted about 2 1/2 weeks & that was ages ago. I'm now 23 days late which is unheard of for me. So, do you think that's it? I've done the POAS 3 times now & it's clear.
My Mum had a hysterectomy at 41, & I've no sisters, so I don't know what to expect or what's next! I'd appreciate some advice really. Thanks.

The rule is that if you have not had a period for 12 months then you are post menopause.

It used to be 2 years for women under 50, but they seem to have changed the guidelines.

Sorry to hear about your other health issues.

You are quite young- 51 is the average- and early meno is under 45. You might want to keep an eye on your bone density over the years because presumably HRT is out of the question after your cancer? Normally women of 46 would be offered HRT up to age 50-51 to prevent osteoporosis.

I'll have to mention the bone density thing to my orthopaedic surgeon. I'm due my next op any time now, so thanks jaffacakes, I hadn't thought of that.

Hi Frat sounds like peri menopause.
No one knows when your periods will stop.

hi Francesniadova officially we are post menopausal if no periods for one year, that means no blood at all, not a trace.

but that's really an old definition, imo totally outdated, made up by a French doctor over a century ago!
He also invented the word menopause , well it did the job in its day, but how useful or relevant is it nowadays?

With all the blood tests and scans and internal exams and the like at medicine's disposal, you'd think they'd be able to pinpoint when exactly the ovaries have shut down for good ffs. What is the NASA doing.

and you know what? Medical researchers have long left it behind , science being more precise than that, so i really do not understand why we are still peddled that old lark of "wait for one year and you'll get your hrt" or whatever and made to use totally unnecessary contraception to boot!!! Are they taking the p** or what. that really gets my goat, is there a self interested reason behind this?
Like, a way to deny all sorts of tests and treatments, or to force women to go through that horrible time without any interference at all because "it's a natural process, dear".

Doctors are under orders from above to limit hrt to an absolute minimum and to treat menopause related "symptomatically", i.e. the effects but not touch on hormones.I am absolutely certain of that.

Anyone care to get acquainted with the current, scientific, useful but not-for -our-eyes definition of the post-menopause?
take a look at this one lifted from a random clinical trial study posted on the net:

"*criteria of being early-POSTmenopausal:

  • blood estrogen < 40pg/ml and - follicle stimulating hormone=FSH > 30 IU/ ml*

There you have it.
Clear, precise, measurable and unmistakable. No faffing around and pulling the wool over our eyes.
