hysteroscopy

I know this has been covered before . . . but I have been told I need one as I have a polyps and a mass by my cervix that needs removing. I have put this off as with kids, dogs, horses etc. (and also being a bit of a wuss as have slight emetophobia) it's hard to organise and am feeling absolutely and completely knackered - I think from the horrendous Niagars falls periods I am having. Has anyone else had this awful tiredness ? Just want to sleep all day.

sorry :(

What sort of advice are you after?

I've had a hysteroscopy but it was without a GA for an investigation.

A close friend had one with a GA and had a polyp removed- was out of the hospital within a couple of hours and absolutely fine.

Desert mum, my gynae wants to do a hysteroscopy because I have mid cycle bleeding and they don't know why. I don't want one. I suffer terribly with emetaphobia, so can't bear the thought of a GA or the thought of the pain of having it without GA. I have an appointment on Monday to discuss!

desertmum · 25/01/2014 21:33

not advise as much as a hand hold! I'm like you kazza - can't do it without a GA as it is a largish mass to be removed. I am going to ask this week if I can have it done with an epidural. Let me know how you get on on Monday - I know they can give you anti emetics and the GA is very short so nausea etc. should be minimal to non existence.

Thanks desert, I'll update after my appointment. I hate the thought of recovering after a GA too, last time it knocked me out for weeks. SadI can't take time off work either, it's a newish job.

Jaffacakesallround · 26/01/2014 10:02

kazza why are you anticipating pain without a GA?

I had one which took some time due to a tight cervix but I can honestly say there was no pain- less than a smear TBH- and you can have a local anaesthetic if you want something instead of a GA.

kazzawazzawoo · 26/01/2014 10:28

The gynae told me it would be painful and also had a coil fitted years ago which was incredibly painful.

My colleague told me about having a local (which my gynae hasn't offered) and that it was a huge needle into the cervix, also very painful!

I just don't want the whole thing!

MrsAMerrick · 26/01/2014 13:34

desertmum I too have Niagra Falls once a month and am exhausted, so I can empathise. I do now take tablets to regulate when my period comes, and time it to start in a Friday evening so at least I can catnap through the worst two days and dont have to cope with work as well when it's at epic gushing stage.

I had a hysteroscopy a few months ago but no GA as it was exploratory. It wasn't too bad. Turns out I have fibroids so am now in consultation with gynae about possible hysterectomy. Great fun ....

Good luck, I hope you get things sorted.

Jaffacakesallround · 26/01/2014 13:43

I think your gynae is a bit mean to say that!
Talk about being negative. How can they predict?

FWIW I had huge problems having a coil fitted 10+ years back- it fell out partially after 5 weeks due I think to not being fully inserted.

However, a hysteroscopy 3 years ago was fine- yes it took time but it was done privately and the agreement was try with nothing, use local if too bad, or re-book for GA.

desertmum · 26/01/2014 15:43

At my last appointment my gynea tried to do a hysteroscopy without any aneasthetic, but it was agony - similar to when they swiped my cervix to try and induce labour . . . Never, ever again. As I have mass blocking my cervix which has to be removed, some sort of anaesthetic is required. So I think it will either be a GA or an epidural.

Desertmum, had my appointment today. I opted out of the hysteroscopy, but have to go back in 4 months if there is no change. She did offer me with or without GA and would even have done it there and then!

toldmywrath · 27/01/2014 16:26

I had a hysteroscopy with a local anaesthetic-it was absolute agony (like very severe labour pains) & I had a panic attack afterwards. So, I would definitely opt for a GA or epidural if I had to have another.( There was no choice offered to me & I didn't realise at the time that I could have asked for more pain relief/GA)
Good luck OP & others who have problems with flooding & tiredness. It's not fair being a woman!

desertmum · 31/01/2014 15:31

kazza, I certainly wouldn't be able to just do it there and then, I would have to be mentally ready for it! Had you gone prepared ? ie. no food or drink for the GA ? I too am putting mine off, my last period was bad but short. I know I should do it but am chickening out for now! One of my concerns is that they might get in there and decide they need to do a full hysterectomy - as I am here alone and have to get son to college, sort out animals etc. it would be extremely difficult. But I think I need to talk to them again about the odds of that happening and the possibility of an epidural. Hope your appointment in 4 months goes well.

also to add, I have started to get hot flushes at night again after 5 months free of them - so maybe I do need to see him for the mirena insertion ?

OP posts:
kazzawazzawoo · 31/01/2014 23:11

I don't know if the mirena will help with hot flushes? Worth having a chat with your gp though.

kazzawazzawoo · 31/01/2014 23:13

Desert, no I didn't go prepared, I went on my work lunchbreak! I had eaten and wouldn't have considered a GA anyway. I think she was suggesting doing it with no pain relief. I was determined not to have it now anyway. I hope that if I did have something sinister I would have other symptoms, but the mid cycle bleeding I have seems hormonal.
