weight gain with HRT - will it settle down????

[hopeful emoticon]! i have never, ever worried about by weight - been pretty consistently 9.11 all my adult life until the last 18 months when it crept up to 10 stone. Started taking Tridestra two weeks ago to ease terrible symptoms and I feel much better...BUT my weight has been jumping day by day and today I'm 10.6!! Shock

I'm worried this is just going to keep going, please help. Has this happened to anyone else and is the weight gain permanent? No other lifestyle factors have changed in the last few weeks at all. I'm really keen to stop the gain. Sad

It's hard to know isn't it? It seems such a coincidence but it's usually the progestins that cause weight gain - so unless you are taking these daily it's unlikely. It's a bit weird to put on half a stone in 2 weeks if you aren't eating any more or exercising any less. Can't be much help really- I haven't put weight on with HRT, but I do have to watch what I eat much more than in my 20s because your metabolism does change.

Call me vain.. but ill never take HRT .. I had progesterone implants in my 40s (which they gave me for menopause symptoms , sweats . flooding etc) and p put on 2and half stone in less than six months.. it took me over five years to lose it mainly i .. menopause can be crap (it was for me ) think because your hormones were all over the shot.. but being fat and menopausal was the pits ..

if i was going through it again now , I'd look to more natural ways for controlling things which I did in the end ,making changes to my diet (losing most of the carbs and sugar helped ) and not eating too late (and cutting down (or totally out drinking alcohol ,it , made a huge difference in night sweats if I was or not ).

Are you sure they were progesterone implants- in your arm? I have never ever heard about those- was it not oestrogen?

Had a hysterectomy 2.5 years ago when I was 26. I am finding it really hard with weight gain too.

Sadly I now have to take HRT til my mid 50s to ward of the problems by having no ovaries and natural hormones. I find it quite depressing

Laska42 · 19/01/2014 16:39

No progesterone only (Implanon) .. I didnt need it for contraception (though it was a contraceptive also ) as i was sterilized .. but it was prescibed to control peri-menopausal flooding .. Seems like it was well known for fast weight gain.. Though that wasnt considered enough of a major side effect for my Doctor to mention at the time.Sad . Has put me off any HRT idea..

bzoo, I'm sorry, I shouldn't be moaning in the circumstances, that must've been really hard for you. Sad… but I am sort of hoping that someone's going to come along and say this happened to them and that its temporary!!

Oh no don't be sorry! That's the hand I was dealt. Just sympathising on the wright gain.

I had a hysterectomy with ovaries removed about 9 years ago aged 34. Have been on HRT at the insistence of my Dr ever snce. I've put on 5 stones, totally depressing and this week I finally told him I've had enough. He has halved my dose and I am going to give it a month and see what happens. I look in the mirror and see a fat person who I don't recognise and it's horrible.

My personal experience was that the weight came off only when I stopped Taking HRT, which of course is not an option for everyone. I put on about 1/2 stone.
