Periods back after a year

RockinD · 16/11/2013 14:54

In 2012 my periods were running at about every other month, with the last one at the beginning of November, so I was counting down my 12 months.

I started medication for an underactive thyroid in June and then realised in October that I was going to have another period. I had a light five day period in October and then realised I was going to have another, which started this morning.

I'm getting PMT symptoms and mucus changes (and pain a couple of weeks before) so they appear to be 'real' periods, but the last one only lasted about a week and was very much lighter than I had been used to.

I have never had a single menopausal symptom and am very glad I didn't listen to the GP who told me ten years ago that I could have my coil out because I didn't need it any more!

Has this happened to anyone else? I was 58 last week and rather hoped I'd be done with this by now.

It's a nuisance not knowing isn't it?
I have gone over six months but not a year, so far it's 7 months and counting... This after 3 years of longer and longer intervals.
They always used to say you should be clear a year before you can be sure.

Please go and see your GP. It may be nothing BUT you are very unusual to have real periods at 58. I think the oldest on record is something like 56-57, but of course there will be cases no one knows about.

Don't want this to sound the wrong way- but are you overweight? Many women who are have no meno symptoms because they have more oestrogen due to fat. However, this does put you at risk for diseases such as breast and endometrial cancer.

Please see your dr and they ought to arrnage a scan.

Thanks missbopeep

Yes, I have an underactive thryoid which has never been properly treated and have gained a lot of weight in the last few years.

I've not long had a gynae referral for a polyp which involved a full exam and a scan and everything was fine, so I'm not worried. The polyp was removed and all was well.

My GP just thinks I am a bit of an oddity.

Was it an interuterine polyp and did you have a hysteroscopy?

I've had numerous scans for odd bleeding but after the first 2 episodes my gynae pretty much insisted on a hysteroscopy- scans are quite accurate but they like to have a good look if there is any doubt.

I think if i were you I'd keep a close eye on things and if you have any more periods, go back and ask for another investigation. It may all be quite normal for you but I know of 2 people - friends of friends-who had uterine cancer in their mid 50s- early 60s and no other signs except odd bleeding.
