Does anyone know what the usual method is when dealing with someone who has not given birth vaginally? it was my cervix that let me down by failing to dilate back then (both times) so I am a bit worried about if cooperating for a hysteroscopy? will be helpful to have some info to help me prepare before my gyn. Appt later this month...

Posh- I'd say it all depends.
It depends on how patient the dr is.
I have given birth twice but on the day of my hysteroscopy my cervix decided not to play ball and was firmly shut.
You can be dilated with the instruments they use-which is what they did with me. Google dilate cervix and you'll see.
If you are having a GA then it won't make any difference. If you are not, then it will take a bit longer and I've heard that some drs give up and send their patients for a GA on another date.
I had the agreement with my dr that we would try with no GA, a local if it got too painful or a re-booked appt for a GA if necessary. It took him about 30 minutes, but it wasn't painful and I'm glad that I went down that route and not a GA. However, this was a private appointment in a very good hospital and I am not sure if in the NHS a dr would have the time to keep trying! I think you have to ask your dr about all of this.

posh- bit confused when you say you've had it twice- have you had this done before?

missbopeep · 07/11/2013 20:26

Oh I see- you have given birth twice but by CS?
It might not make any difference. The scope is 2-3mm across-tiny- rather smaller than a baby's head- so it may be fine.

Hi - I'm due to have a D&C, hysteroscopy and polypectomy in a couple of weeks. The surgeon offered me a GA, but as I don't like being wiped out for a few days I asked if I could have a spinal and he said yes, fine, so I'm not going to feel anything during the procedures, but am panicking a bit now after reading some of the messages on here about pain etc afterwards. I guess everyone's different and some will experience more discomfort than others. I thought I would be fine after and able to go back to work after a day or 2? Also I'm not having any sedation during the procedure (I know it will be offered) because of previous bad experiences. Has anyone else had any of these procedures carried out with a spinal and no sedation???

Cheers

I have to have this done for a polyp removal and something which is blocking my cervix - the consultant tried to do it while I was awake but it hurt like hell and he couldn't get my cervix to open. He thinks the blockage could be a fibroid or some afterbirth that was left behind - which is a bit yukky as my youngest is 17! Not looking forward to the GA as I am phobic about vomitting . . . but will tell the aneasthatist and hope they give me something to stop any nausea. I have to call up and make the appointment - but keep putting it off :-(

Hi, I had a Hysteroscopy done today, I was so terrified, but.the nurses were so good. I was that terrified I had to have Gas and Air which helped Alot, the most painful part was when they gave me an injection into my cervix, to numb the area and the Gas and Air helped me throughout the rest, just felt like they were pulling and tugging but not painful, I would definitely recommend to stay awake but ask for the numbing of the Cervix and a bit of gas and Air. hope this helps as I was a nervous wreck but it helped a hell of alot
