Aarghh flooding!

I am 50, still have periods but had a massive flood yesterday despite wearing a super plus tampon and pad - pants and trousers soaked. Luckily I was at home. I had to go to A &E to see the out of hours GP. She prescribed Norethisterone but told me to go back to my own GP next week to get sorted.

I just wondered where I go from here. I have had an ultrasound and smear a few months ago which were clear - this was after irregular bleeding and spotting. I am just dreading the possibility of another flood happening at work or on the tube etc. Would HRT be the best option?

I've had this problem all my life, and now at age 46 and having taken almost every artificial hormone and with a mirena in situ, my GP has finally admitted I may have endometriosis and is referring me for treatment

I'd taking norethisterone 21 days out of 28 until then.

GP will not consider HRT until bleeding is investigated

I hope you have more success than me

Yes, you need to be checked.

The commonest cause at this age is adenomyosis - which is a diagnosis of exclusion usually (ie they scan you and rule out all the other possible causes). If they find something like fibroids, then they treat as appropriate. If adenomyosis, then it's a case of treating to suppress symptoms (as it cannot be cured). I think HRT is possible (mirena is sometimes recommended).

Thank you both. I had an ultrasound (abdominal and vaginal)and they found nothing abnormal. I don't get pain - lot less than before if anything. I will ask the GP to explain the options - prefer to avoid more testing and medication but looks like I have to.

HRT wont sort this because the oestrogen will simply build up the lining more.
The Mirena coil is a good option, and endometrial ablation but at your age they'd be more likely to skip that ( as your periods should fizzle out in a year or two.)

I have just been reading a paper on perimenopause and it would appear (if you do not have any other problems) that this is not unusual later on on the perimenopause due to high oestrogen levels, and no ovulation resulting in lack of progesterone.

Hope it passes soon!

I have this problem too, was fitted 3 years ago with a Mirena which made no difference, and then was prescribed noresthisterone which i take 21 days out of 28, plus Tranexamic Acid when I'm having my (incredibly heavy) periods. I saw a consultant last month, and i have a large fibroid. I'm going back soon to see what action (if any) the hospital can offer. he removed the Mirena as it didn't seem to be doing any good. I have had one period since then which was just as heavy as previously when the Mirena was in BUT only last 6 days (they had increased with the Mirena until they were about 14 - 16 days each month. Oh joy).

I had all the tests under the sun and scans galore but nobody could find anything. Given my age of being 37, I was told it could not be, in any way, not at all, uh-uh perimenopause.

I was however, having floods, nearly passing out due to blood loss, really emotional from one scale to the other, flushes and more.

I went to a private doctor in Spain who said my uterine lining is thin and that could lead to be having periods every 2 weeks. I got prescribed noristerone which alongside tranexemic acid, transformed my life. I was meant to go back and see her this week but I haven't been able to get back to Spain. My gp here won't prescribe me noristerone and has only given me cerazette. This has stopped the mood swings and makes me feel clearer in my mind but I've had periods every 2 weeks and put on the 10 kg I lost last year.

What's my point? I'm not quite sure! I'm not sure if I'm over sharing or just giving a picture but the noristerone might be of help and serve to calm your mind as well as your body.
