Return of periods after nine years

Has anyone experienced the return of their periods after years of nothingness while NOT using contraception?

I'm 43 & last had a period nine years ago. It occurred at the same time as a major spinal surgery & my GP felt the surgery caused such a shock to my body, that it stopped my monthly bleed. My hormone levels were checked & all were perfectly normal with no signs of peri menopause.

Last Wednesday I began to bleed again. Initially it was old blood, but as of yesterday evening, its been very very heavy blood loss. I spoke with a locum GP this morning who has prescribed Tranexamic Acid & said that my bloods may need re-testing & to keep an eye on things for the next couple of months. I have had hypothyroidism for about six years & take a low dose of Levothyroxine. My thyroid was tested six weeks ago & all was as it should be. I've looked online & am giving myself more worry than reassurance. I've not heard or read about anyone who has had such a long gap between periods?

Can anyone offer me some advise or reassurance?

Hmmm. I'd probably want a gynae referral to clear up why the absent periods, and find out the cause of the bleeding now. Could this in fact be a miscarriage? Have you been pregnant before? Polyps? Up to date for smear tests? Any other symptoms?

Sorry Op, it must be awful having such a big loss after such a long time without.
The fact that your GP is on top of your condition would give me reassurance and I suppose he/she has checked that all relevant tests are up to date, you mentioned blood tests.
I think if they were particularly worried about something they would be referring or testing immediately, not asking you keep your eye on it for a month or two.
I know its easy to say but don't worry. Looking up your symptoms on the internet can lead to all sorts of diagnosis, scare you half mad and be totally wrong. Try and keep off if you can.

Have they been checked since? If not they you may now be post menopausal and in that case need a referral to gynae OPD. Your GP is wrong to not establish whether this is post meno bleeding or not

I had early menopause, mid thirties. When I had a bleed after several years absence, I was sent to hospital for checks very quickly.

All was fine, but they found no reason for the bleed. I get on average one a year now.

I think I'd be pushing for a gynae referral.

Although surgery can suppress menstruation for some time after the procedure, that's a few months not years! I wouldn't have expected persistent amenhorrhea in 32yr old to be left under-investigated. Bloods, like MOT, give the results for that day only. You can't turn the clock back though; but you can push for fuller investigations by a specialist (not a generalist) now.
