For anyone who is post-menopause

I was wondering if anyone who has been through the menopause could say just when they did stop having periods? And did they feel less hormonal afterwards?
Only there are so many of us here talking about peri symptoms all the way through our forties, though books etc seem to imply it's a late 40's phenomenon. So I was thinking that maybe the figure of 52ish for the actual average ending of AF is actually very variable too?
40 years of this is getting to me, can you tell?!
TIA

I was 53 when I had my last period, but I had my last dc at 43 and i've heard that a baby later in life can make the menopause later
I didn't feel particularly hormonal but I sometimes miss the 'highs' of the hormonal circles if that makes sense
Cant take hrt because of heart problems, so even now I still get hot flushes.

scaevola · 02/07/2013 08:05

I asked DMum - her last was age 46ish.

I'm still going (and older than that).

Missbopeep · 02/07/2013 13:10

The average age is 52. The actual age varies as you have discovered. It can be anywhere from 45- 56.
You can't and won't feel as if you have PMT, but the loss of hormones- especially oestrogen- leave some women with a whole lots of symptoms that can be short, medium or long term. Sorry- but that's the truth!

Don't wish your periods away because you are simply heralding another era for women when certain health issues- heart disease and osteoporosis- become far more serious issues than PMT or periods.

patchworkchick · 02/07/2013 22:24

I was 44 when I last had a period and mood wise i'm ok these days, but am on HRT.

Letticetheslug · 17/08/2013 12:01

I was 51 iirc.

loopylou532000 · 17/08/2013 21:35

I was 43 when I had my last period. Am now 52 & have been having symptoms all that time.
I have just decided that enough is enough and have only this week started taking HRT.
I'm not sure of anything yet but am told I will probably start having a monthly bleed - after 9 years of nothing!!
This seems very strange to me but I'll have to see how it goes.
Sorry to go on a bit.
Rant over.

Thanks cats. Yes I suppose you can get used to anything in time!
I have tried all sorts of natural remedies - sage tablets did help a little with the hot flushes but as that isn't the only problem, I did give in in the end.
Anyway everyone is different and I was quite early starting, so hopefully yours won't be so bad Thanks

grimbletart · 19/08/2013 22:49

I was 51. The hot flushes did last a long time (bastard things) and they seem to have reset my thermostat as I never ever feel the cold now (can go outside in a T shirt even in winter) but I had no other problems. Can't say anything about feeling less hormonal though as I was lucky enough never to have hormonal problems before e.g. never had period pains or PMT.

ExitPursuedByABear · 19/08/2013 22:54

I think I was 52 ish. Had flushes for a few months. I am 54 now and no other obvious symptoms. Not taken anything. And I have managed to lose weight

Lazysuzanne · 20/08/2013 23:31

Grimble and Exit, it's good to hear from women who have had a relatively trouble free time, I know some women really do suffer and I guess they are far more likely to feel the need to share/seek help & support on forums.

Thing is that tends to give a distorted view of the menopause!

ExitPursuedByABear · 21/08/2013 07:14

I never had trouble with periods. Except when I had a coil fitted. I had friends who had to take days off school.

Lazysuzanne · 21/08/2013 11:07

do you think there is some correlation between trouble free periods and a trouble free menopause?

ExitPursuedByABear · 21/08/2013 13:07

Yes - on my small sample of two Grin

Really, I have no idea, I was just throwing that into the mix.

I was thinking about this subject this morning and the only thing I have noticed since coming through the menopause is that I think I smell Blush.

I shower daily but when I get up in a morning I am aware that I am a bit wiffy. I do sweat a lot in the night, but it has been very warm. I may have to start showering at both ends of the day.

ExitPursuedByABear · 21/08/2013 13:09

And did get a couple of occasions when I experienced absolutely crashing fatigue - I was walking the dog and I just wanted to curl up under a bush and go to sleep. I was quite scared and googled when I got home and lo and behold, it is a symptom of the menopause. Who knew!

Lazysuzanne · 21/08/2013 13:15

sure, but crashing fatigue can happen at any time..cant it?

VenusRising · 21/08/2013 13:35

Fatigue can happen at anytime. Maybe get your thyroid checked.

And try and sleep cool in the night, you may be waking up with the overheating and nightsweats, and not even knowing.

ExitPursuedByABear · 21/08/2013 14:24

Can it? I'd never had it and when I googled it came up with menopause websites.

I sleep nekkid with just a sheet. Might try the pillow in the freezer trick.

missbopeep · 21/08/2013 16:27

I don't think there is any correlation between trouble free periods and trouble free menopause- the 2 are completely different.
One's caused by hormones and the other by lack of hormones.

Exit- do you not normally shower in the morning?
In my family we all shower or bath twice a day and always have.

Night sweats are one of the commonest symptoms of meno.
