Unhelpful GP

Am I the only one to have gone to my GP (male) to have been warned off Menopace (over the counter) and to be told to "put up with" menopausal symptoms?

Surely he could have at least suggested an alternative?

Could you see a different doctor? He doesn't sound nice at all.

I wasn't't sure what to expect, to be honest. I feel better now, mainly through controlling diet and getting more exercise etc, and just wondered if his reaction is common. Seems quite arrogant if so, and wondered whether others have experienced the same.

Patient.co.uk has got excellent leaflets on the menopause and both HRT and non HRT treatments so have a look there. I'm sorry your GP was unhelpful, is there a female one you can go and speak to? What are your symptoms?

did you have blood tests to check it is menopause and not eg thyroid?

I would try to change my dr if I were you.

What a horrid attitude

FWIW my gynae ( who I see privately because I had other problems) recommends Menopace and lots of other " alternative" approaches for his patients who don't want or can't take HRT. He also as it happens takes a very dim view of many GPs who are out of date and clueless about menopause.

Thanks for replies. I took Menopace because it was recommended by the pharmacist. I found it fine for a while until it stopped working so well. The doc claimed a link with breast cancer, which I suppose is fair enough, but he didn't recommend anything else either. I was having quite severe flushes, but I''ve also been sleeping badly, been feeling miserable and more tired than uusual. I put all of these symptoms down to the menopause.

I''ve worked hard at my weight but finding it more and more difficult. Since I''ve been eating better, I feel better, but I will definitely get checked out for thyroid.
