forgetfulness? Is it part of the menopause/peri-menopause

I've just had the most awful eposide of forgetfulness, got the feeling I'm going through the early stages as it's been 7 weeks since my last period.

Can anyone reassure me that I'm not actually going mad?

I'm sure you're not going mad euwa! (Well you may be....!). Seriously there are over 30 symptoms that can be attributed to menopause and the peri-menopausal stage can last for 10 years before the last period. The symptoms manifest themselves differently with individual women. Personally I didn't start thinking about the menopause until I started missing periods and then I realised the other symptoms I was experiencing were probably due to this too.

Forgetfulness is definitely one of them - difficulty concentrating - forgetting words and the names of things and people, forgetting why you went into a room - sounding familiar?

I presume you know you are not pregnant?

When/if you start getting troublesome physical symptoms you may feel you would like to ask your GP for HRT. Hopefully these will not be for some time!

Isn't this just old age as well:)

I'm forgetful all the time but as I'm on HRT I can't really attribute it to the meno.

I am more forgetful, definitely. But then, so's my husband, who is 59.

It can be good news. I forget spats, awkwardnesses, etc. I find this quite useful as I seem to be able to wipe the slate clean more easily and not worry about what people are thinking about me.

God I hope it's the menopause!

I've been wondering if I had the beginnings of early senility- the GP asked me to come for a blood testg & I forgot that despite a big note in the diary!

Anyway got it done oh yes WELL menopausal...so on with the HRT I'll report back if/when it improves....if I remember Grin

euwa · 09/09/2012 12:30

That's how I feel - ie hope it's the menopause otherwise I am in the early stages of senility!

No chance at all that I am pregnant - very easy to rule that one out.

Yes like Bellaciao said it's now dawning on my that little things that keep occuring all point towards menopause... either that or old age one and the same I guess Sad

I am forgetful and just don't feel as intelligent as I used to. Feel jaded and today particularly inadequate [slow brain embarrassed me today rather publicly].
In my mid 40s. Should I take those over 50 supplements you can get? Worry about high dose of vitamins mind you. Any suggestions? Thank you.

I've noticed -err what was I saying? Grin
Yes, mine started noticeably about a month before I noticed any other symptoms. I was in denial for ages, but it was just so bloody obvious what they were all pointing to.

Sunflowers - well I don't know about supplements. Are you peri-menopausal or don't you know - periods regular etc? It;s important to have a very healthy balanced diet - not too much fat nor refined foods - cooking from basic natural ingredients and pleny of fruit and vegetables, dairy etc as well as exercise, no smoking and not too much alcohol. Sounds like fun?! Shouldn't really need supplements if you re eating well - I take a bit of Calc and Vit D when I remember, and some herbal iron tonic when I remember but otherwise it's diet for me.

Others will probably swear by their fave supplement....
