How do I get my GP to take PMS seriously?

PMS symptoms have in recent years got out of control and this month has been awful. I get the rage, cotton wool head, tiredness and days of when I can't stop crying. It starts to get better from day1 and towards day3-4 I'm back to normal.

This month I have worried my family so much that I made a GP appointment however in the past it hasn't helped, at all, as the GP just didn't take it seriously. I do all the self help stuff like EPO, rest, regular eating and I exercise very day.

The symptoms have got 100% worse so I believe it's menopausal but should I push for a test for that..would HRT help?

Hi, I was the same until one mth I couldn't,take anymore and saw my gp who was very sympathetic, took me seriously and prescribed a low dose of citalopram. I feel so much better, I still get pmt but no longer feel like dying or murdering dh. Go and just tell them how you feel.

Agree - but I found my GP not terribly helpful. Best thing for me was acupuncture, and avoiding sugar the two weeks before

OMG, No chocolate!!! I will try the GP but maybe I do need alternative treatments - acupuncture.

I have severe pms, currently I am in a medically induced menopause as I wait for a total hysterectomy. Ask your GP to refer you to gyn. I haven't looked back, don't let them fob you off, it took a friend of mine dragging me to the docs when I was at my worst to make them help me. I constantly got the it's only hormones take some vitamins spiel.

Smum99 · 18/05/2012 20:21

Thanks Oh, I did previously ask for a referral (& we have private cover) but the GP seemed highly reluctant on the basis she would have to do 'something' beforehand..but the something was never offered.

I have changed surgeries so hopefully a new GP will be more proactive.

Good luck, and don't back down. I was a total nightmare for two weeks out of the four Sad Keep a diary while you wait of your symptoms days of your cycle etc, I at one point convinced myself I was bi polar. My poor mum had to rescue my dc's on several occasions too Blush When I look back I was a loonatic because of my evil hormones, keep at them.

Ask for a thyroid test as well as a menopause test - my pms was awful but has gone completely now I'm on thyroid meds.

Saw a lovely GP (sooo young) but he was very keen to help, and he has arranged blood tests which will include thyroid (thanks Merci, I did consider thyroid and I'm glad it's helped you).

He has also prescribed something for the heavy bleeds as well. I'm so glad I changed GP surgery as I have previously been stonewalled.

That's great
So often problems are picked up when you change practice
Good luck

May be worth having your vit d levels checked. I went to the doctors feeling awful with just terrible PMS, alternating rage and weeping, terrible skin. I wondered if these were peri menopausal symptoms (i'm 46) or perhaps thyroid problems.

GP wrote out an extensive list of blood tests and prescribed me citalopram in the meantime. Awful, awful, awful. I felt one hundred times worse and only took 3 tablets.

My blood results came back as having a severe vit d deficiency. I was prescribed a very high dose vit d supplement. I felt markedly better within a week. Now my PMS is back to feeling just a little bit weepy for a day or so. Remarkable really. And skin has all cleared up.
