anyone ever get a dry eye(s)? one of my eyes has a swollen(ish) bag underneath, been there not sure for how long, at a guess a few weeks or so plus my eye is apparently very dry (according to optician) which makes sense as it feels dry/been uncomfortable due to getting dust etc in it, just hadn't realised. optomotrist asked my age and said it is/can be a peri' symptom, how we can dry up all over the place...nice

oh what joy

ameliagrey · 06/03/2012 17:47

yes- common but can also be a symptom of taking HRT!

everything dries out with peri and meno. Everything.

I have a hairline crack in a molar and dentist told me it had dried out- with age.

amelia - blimey, TEETH dry out! i saw dr the other day who said i am definately in peri' phase although i didn't need a blood test to tell me that (i am 47). my eye, only the left, has really dried out suddenly/from nowhere which is why i thought it might be something else, she is sending me to an 'eye person'. us women really do have a raw deal in some aspects (all the body changing stuff). i don't want to take hrt, can't really, as history of uterine cancer in my family and i think we are supposed to avoid it because of something that is in it....hopefully i won't get awful symptoms so can manage without

I have horrendously dry eyes. Dr won't check for peri menopause as he said I'm too young (46!!!???). However I seem to ahve a lot of other symptoms, chronic fatigue, mood swings weight gain.

I did go to the optician who said I had a lot of blocked ducts so it may be a combination of things. However she did recommend a wheat bag that you heat up in the microwave and then put over your eyes. That has really helped and also helps the slight head ache I always seem to have which I think is due to my eyes being so dry.

teeth drying out??? oh god, am just 50. This is hurtling towards me isn't it?

for fucks sake, no sooner do we get past the child bearing phase and all of the bastard body changes that inflicts, then we get to the bastard menopause.

Bastard.

I too have dry eyes, caused by blocked ducts (meibomial glands). I have to use hot compresses as Dexterthecat described (except I boil the kettle and pour the hot water over a flannel and use that). It helps but they still feel uncomfortable. Currently trying an Optrex product for dry eyes (a spray that you spray onto closed eyes). Not sure it is working but I'll keep trying a bit longer (only bought it on Tuesday and it was vv expensive!). Am only 43 Sad.

huw :) really funny. we also have hair loss and gain at the same time. i have less pubic hair (another symptom apparently) although my face has hair that never used to...

blighter · 09/03/2012 16:34

i've been trying systane eye drops, have any of you tried them? not sure about them really, my vision is really blurred for a while after i have put them in. it is only my left eye that is really dry which is why i think it is more than an age thing, surely they would both be if it was just peri' bollocks?

Jellycat I used that spray too. Shockingly expensive. It works at the time you use it and then wears off so no different than the much cheaper drops which seemed to do the same thing.

jellycat · 14/03/2012 20:28

Actually Dexter I've been finding it works better for me than the other drops I've tried. I guess that's because it supports the lipid layer (which is what is lacking in meibomial gland disorder) rather than just replacing the tears (which I am producing, it's just that they evaporate too quickly when you are not producing sufficient lipid). I've only been using it a few days though, and still doing hot compresses.

PhyllisDoris · 28/03/2012 23:54

Better than Systane is drops called Hylo-tear, available on prescription.
I have a problem with my eyes getting infected because they are dry. The lids aggravate the eye surface and my eyes get very inflamed. Hylo-tear really help.

patchworkchick · 05/04/2012 09:53

Ah the joys of drying up like a prune, I'm going to try eye drops as I thought it was just me! But dry teeth..............
