hi can I ask a question about hrt? I was advised to think about starting it, have been peri for last 3 years (DD age 6 think I was a bit peri before her) I am 43. I'm concerned about hrt as I also take meds for blood pressure and am concerned about the oestrogen in hrt (have never been able to take birth control pill due to the oestrogen and link to high blood pressure) also does hrt make you put on weight? Would be grateful for any responses, thanks

Have your periods stopped or are you just peri?

High blood pressure has to be monitored if you take HRT - but can you reduce your blood pressure by lifestyle measures? Have you tried?

HRT does not make you put on weight.

Weight gain after menopause is something that happens to lots of women if they don't eat less and exercsie more as metabolism slows down.

If your periods stop before you are 45 you are classed as having an early meno, and HRT is advised to protect your bones, long term.

hi amelia, thanks for reply;
My periods have stopped over a year now. I was trying for baby number 2 a year ago - going through fertility hormone tests showed peri meno and low egg reserve, we declined ivf as it would have meant using donor eggs. Double whammy infertility and meno all in one!

My blood pressure is controlled, my weight below 8 st, normal for my height cholestrol= low. I train 4-5 times a week cycling/running etc am very fit and follow a vegan diet. So lifestyle isn't an issue.

I have hot flushes and generally a "hot" person since having my DD 6 years ago. Generally don't seem to suffer mood swings. Libido is nil though, my DH very understanding - the whole fertility stress was a trial I think. I have started taking evening primrose/starflower oil to see if that helps. Also been looking into herbal remedies like black cohosh but again concerned about contraindications with BP meds

Think I will def make apppointment to see GP to discuss options, thanks again for advice

I think when you have a complicated medical history it might be advisable to ask your GP for a referral to a gynae who specialises in meno- but from what you say you do need HRT if your periods are well and truly over at 40.

Hope you get on okay.
