Night sweats

Hello. Can anyone suggest a treatment? I suffer from terrible night sweats. They are at their worst for the week before my period. I have been tested for early menopause (I am 33) but was told this was not the problem. I have even been given HRT to try but as it made no difference they say it can't be menopause. I have seen on the web that masses of people suffer with this but I have never seen an answer or a treatment. Please help! It is at a ridiculous stage where I get no sleep, I have to sleep on a towel and get up several times a night to change my clothes and dry myself off. I am also on anti depressants (which I know can cause sweats) but the sweats started way before I took them. Thanks.

I think people on here think that im a sales person for ladycare magnets but im not ( im a scottish SAHM looking after my autistic son ) and this magnet really does work, i had terrible hot flushes and night sweats and when i saw this magnet in a womans magazine ( take a break or similar, cant remember ) i went straight on their website, ordered one and can honestly say that i noticed the difference straight away, my flushes got less and were totally gone after a few days, from the first day of wearing it i had no more night sweats and havnt since ( apart from the time i lost my magnet on holiday ) my bloating also disappeared after a few weeks and it also lifted my mood.
I was very sceptical when i first got it but thought what the hell its only £20 ( i had already spent triple that on vitamins etc ) and was genuinly amazed when it worked, it has also worked for my sister and a couple of freinds and even the nurse at my GPs surgery who takes my blood preasure.

fiddlydee · 21/03/2011 13:38

Thank you. I must admit I am sceptical but I am willing to try anything at the moment.

I have been taking Menolieve, from Boots, for the last 5 weeks, and it's fantastic. It's a herbal/traditional remedy, based on black cohosh.

They stopped the first night I started taking it.

(Which could mean it was a placebo but I don't care!)

bittersweetvictory · 21/03/2011 13:49

I still cant believe it works and i have been wearing it for a year and a half now and it is one of my most treasured possesions, i dont even know how it works but dont care, i get my blood preasure checked regularly and my GP has offered me HRT etc but i dont need it, i havnt had a period now for 11 months and my bloods show that i am menopausal.
I think a lot of women are sceptical as it seems too easy to be true, but it is Smile

I am having a bout of terrible night sweats at the momentSad and the GP has put me on the pill - notheristerone for a trial 3 months. I've been taking it for a week, but no good so far.

I am going to give it a month at least and then try that Menolieve - it can't just be a placebo, can it?

fiddlydee · 23/03/2011 13:33

Hi Tilly Mint (I can't bring myslef to call you Big Tilly!). I do sympathise. It's horrible having night sweats. My GP tried me on Northisterone but it gave me terrible depression - apparently not unusual for this type of pill. They put me on one called Cilest as apparently it is a high oestrogen pill. That didn't help either. They even tried oestrogen only HRT despite the fact that I am apparently not suffering premature menopause. Do you mind me asking how old you are and if you are menopausal?

bigTillyMint · 23/03/2011 13:59

TillyMint would have been my name if someone else hadn't already had itAngry

Oh No! Glad you gave me the head's up on the possibility of depression - don't fancy that in addition to all the other symptoms!

I am 46 and the GP said my blood tests show that I am probably in the peri-menopause. My periods are all over the place - 3 weeks, 2, 3, 4 months, never know when and very heavy when they come. I have always suffered from PMT but it's even worse now, the hot flushes and night sweats are terrible at the moment.... It's crap isn't itSmile

I'm going to give th pill a month and if anything is worse, I'll stop it, otherwise I'm supposed to be giving it 3months.

Are you on anything now? People keep telling me black cohosh is good, have you tried that?

fiddlydee · 24/03/2011 12:00

Hi TillyMint

I currently sleep on a towel with another beside me for wiping away the sweat! Disgusting isn't it? I'm sorry you're suffering. Thanks for the suggestion of Black Cohosh. I have just googled it but apparently it doesn't go well with the antidepressants I'm on. Don't worry too much about the northisterone. Although my doctor said it is not uncommon for it to cause depression - I think I may be particuarly susceptible to that sort of thing. If that doesn't work and you don't want to turn to HRT yet then there are some really high oestrogen pills. My sister swears by Chinese medicine. I am tempted to give it a go but have no idea how you tell if someone is reputable.

Enjoy the beautiful sun today! x

Tilly - if you're concerned about depression as a side-effect, why don't you try the Menolieve first?

It could be a placeo for all I know - but I honestly don't care! I haven't been woken up with a hot flush since I've been taking it, which is about 4 weeks now.

bigTillyMint · 25/03/2011 06:23

Right, I'm off to Boots asap - yet another sweaty night, not helped by my uber-hot DH insisting on sleeping in the middle or even on my halfAngry!

My friend is practically certified(?!) as a Chinese Medicine practictioner, but as she lives in France (and is French!), I forsee some tricky telephone consultationsSmile

I'm hoping that the nothereisterone doesn't cause any depression - PMT red mists are bad enough! OK so far, and the iron tablets for the anaemia seem to be doing the trick - back to normal energy levels!

fiddlydee · 30/03/2011 09:52

Ladies, I have been told by everyone who has tried it that Chinese medicine is the answer. I have been along and although slightly sceptical, I have started a 12 week course. They were amazingly perceptive about my health issues, both physical and mental and are completely confident that they can solve my night sweats and depression very quickly and simply with no nasty chemicals. Watch this space..... I'll let you know!

OP posts:
BecauseImWorthIt · 30/03/2011 10:20

What are they giving you? I will never, never in a million years be able to take some of their herbs! My friend was taking some recently - just the smell of them made me gag.

(And be careful because their medicines contain just as many nasty chemicals as our 'conventional' ones)

But interested to hear the outcome!

fiddlydee · 31/03/2011 12:30

I'm having acupuncture, cupping therapy, and herbs for depression and hormone balance. I couldn't tell you what they are - it's all in Chinese! Thanks for the advice about their medicines. They are aware that I am on anti-depressants but I will make the point again as I know you have to be very careful what you mix with ADs. The herb pills smell and taste like old cigars. I have to take handfulls of them three times a day. I have developed a nose-holding technique!

I'll keep you updated as to progress. What may be helpful on this forum is that the depression may take longer to sort but they are very confident that they can get rid of my night sweats within a week or two. We'll see.

I suffer from night sweats as well and mine started this time before my period. I can manage and not have to change but it is so horrible and you can feel the sweat running down your face.

i don't experience hot flushes though. I am 43 and I had a blood test which was okay.

fiddlydee · 04/04/2011 21:46

having done a bit of googling since I was affected by this, night sweats in the week before your period seem to be extremely common but noone in the medical world seems to be able to give an explanation, or a cure. Hang in there. If I find the answer through this bizarre Chinese medical lark I'll let you know. First night in ages with no sweats last night. I am not convinced yet but we'll see what happens tonight.

BIWI I'm on day 3 of the Menolieve, and still getting the night sweats and hot flushesSad Fingers crossed it kicks in soon!

At least it means I can stop wearing all my winter jumpers, even on a day like this!

BecauseImWorthIt · 05/04/2011 18:15

Are you? Oh dear. They worked for me immediately. Possibly I'm more suggestible than you and they're just a placebo!!!

Are you keeping your carbs low? Too much alcohol can precipitate them as well, sorry to say.

bigTillyMint · 05/04/2011 18:30

I don't drink much (apart from the odd Saturday night bingeBlush) And I don't really eat too many carbs. Will keep on with them, of course - nothing to lose!

So far no period with the notheristerone, yay!
