i am 44.i thought this was going to be ok - had a few night sweats already and not too concerned.

periods like clockwork pretty much until this one started two weeks late with about 10 days of light bleeding which is unusual for me.

after that (without a break) i am now a week in of a bleed that has become really heavy with bright bright red blood.not at all painful though.

does this sound like your experience of the beginning of the menopause? - my mum went through it at 46.

thanks Smile

yes- patterns run in families. We do talk about all of this here but this forum has a limited number of posters- most MNs tend to be younger!

However, the peri meno can run for 10 years- so a one-off episode of anything odd may bejust that- you need to wait and see if there is a pattern and things going a bit iffy over another year or so.

sharbie- what you are having is quite normal for someone aged 44! You might find it all settles down again, which is what i found- funny spotting etc aged 47- but my final period was not until aged 53-54.

sharbie · 24/02/2011 19:13

oh blimey - that's ages yet.i may be wayyy to optimistic hoping it will all be over soon.

I'm in peri and my periods can last 3 weeks. Same as you, sometimes it's bright red not like the usual menstrual blood.

I'm 46 and peri started about 4 years ago with flushes, irregular periods etc. Then it would settle down for a while with everything back to normal.

sharbie · 25/02/2011 13:10

thanks privategodfrey - its a relief to know this is kind of normal

Sharbie,
I wrote on a different blog that I was Peri Menopausal from about 34yrs old...I started with the same symptoms as you are experiencing and because of the heavy bleeding etc like you have had I thought there may be something wrong and went to my GP. That's when I heard the words Peri Menopausal for the first time....GP told me patterns tend to run in the family ..which in my case they did..It can be just as bad as a ''normal''menopause and as Cabbageroses said can last for years... I then had to have a Hysterectomy when I was 36yrs and was put on HRT so I can't say how long those symptoms would have lasted for me..but I do sympathise, as I am now going through a full blown Menopause due to a recent operation which took both Ovaries and boy, is it different to what I thought was the Menopause all those years ago! I am now back on HRT and thanks to this Blog (and Cabbageroses for the first response) I am now feeling that I am not alone in all this!!

sharbie · 25/02/2011 16:07

gosh wendav mine is not that bad - it stopped the other day but now there is a small amount again.must be about 4 weeks now.sorry to hear about your ops and hope things improve.its a bit of a shock to the system isn't it? Smile

Hi Sharbie,
Yep, had a bad year but getting over it now....HRT has just started to kick in and I'm starting to feel human again....I think the best advice I can give is obviously live with it as much as you can but don't let it get unbearable to the point where it affects your quality of life....It did for me back in my late 30's...We women know it's a ''normal''process of life but sometimes it can get out of hand...
